ITINERARY
DAY 1
Arrival in Tenerife
Arrival transfer to the hotel in Garachico
+ Hotel La Quinta Roja (Garachico)
DAY 2
Stage 1: Garachico – Cueva del Viento
After crossing the square where the hotel stands, the trail appears, zigzagging upwards towards San Juan del Reparo. Spectacular views gradually open up over the entire coastline and the Valle de La Orotava.
A steady climb then continues from San Juan del Reparo towards La Montañeta, along the bed of a ravine through which the lava of the Chinyero Volcano flowed in 1909.
From La Montañeta, the path crosses a forest of enormous Canarian pines reaching nearly 50 metres in height, heading eastwards through the Corona Forestal Natural Park.
On the descent, cultivated plots and houses gradually appear, scattered across the mountain landscape. Arriving at Cueva del Viento, we find a compact village centre beside the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
17.7 km | +1,191 m / -623 m
+ Hotel La Quinta Roja (Garachico)
DAY 3
Stage 2: Cruz del Tronco – Los Realejos
After a 20-minute transfer to the Ermita de La Cruz del Tronco, the second stage begins by plunging directly into the Corona Forestal Natural Park. The trail climbs to an altitude of 1,050 metres and heads towards the El Lagar campsite.
The entire stage unfolds through a beautiful Canarian pine forest, crossing stretches of scrubland dotted here and there with country houses. Well past the halfway point, the route enters farmland with terraced plots where vines and vegetables are cultivated.
The sweeping view of the blue ocean is a constant companion throughout the route. Once the cliff edge is reached, a breathtaking vista opens up over the entire Valle de La Orotava. From here, the path descends to El Lance, passes through Tigaiga, and a little further on reaches Los Realejos, where our next accommodation awaits.
18.1 km | +484 m / -904 m
+ Hotel Rural Bentor (Los Realejos)
DAY 4
Stage 3: Los Realejos – El Portillo
The next stage begins right at our accommodation. It is a demanding stretch whose spectacular views are the perfect reward. From Los Realejos, the slope is steep and leads up to the Mirador de La Corona, where an extraordinary view unfolds over the entire Valle de La Orotava.
From there, the climb continues through different vegetation zones, where heather and faya alternate with rockrose and the occasional laurel tree. Higher up, the pine forests offer welcome shade on the challenging ascent, filling the air with their distinctive fragrance.
Before reaching the Cañadas del Teide, the trail crosses the cloud layer that typically wraps around the valley. Beyond it, the imposing silhouette of Pico del Teide suddenly comes into view, rising majestically ahead. An indescribable sight after the hard climb. From the Mirador El Fregel, the route continues through the otherworldly volcanic landscape to El Portillo. The bar there offers a well-deserved refreshment before the taxi takes us back to the hotel.
16.2 km | +1,908 m / -117 m
+ Hotel Rural Bentor (Los Realejos)
DAY 5
Stage 4: El Portillo – Parador de Las Cañadas
After a short transfer to El Portillo, the Siete Cañadas trail begins, heading towards Montaña de Guajara.
The Siete Cañadas del Teide offer a remarkable landscape of endemic flora, tracing the full circuit of the Las Cañadas caldera at its base. Along the route, curious volcanic formations appear, such as La Papelera and El Palomar, as well as ancient Guanche settlements.
The final section of the GR 131 on this stage follows the Las Siete Cañadas track across the southern side, with the commanding presence of Montaña de Guajara (2,718 m) and Pico del Teide (3,715 m) until reaching the Parador Nacional.
Alternatively, other routes of varying difficulty can be chosen for this day, depending on your current fitness level:
a/ Circular route around the Roques de García (1.5 hours on foot).
b/ Ascent to the Pico del Teide from Montaña Blanca with descent by cable car (5 hours on foot).
16.1 km | +230 m / -138 m
+ Parador de Las Cañadas (Cañadas del Teide)
DAY 6
Stage 5: Las Cañadas – Vilaflor
After a restorative night stargazing under the privileged night sky of Las Cañadas, today’s route begins with a short climb to cross the Degollada de Guajara. From the top, an indescribable view stretches over the entire southern slope of Tenerife as well as the full Las Cañadas caldera with its Pico Viejo, Pico del Teide, and Montaña Blanca.
From the Degollada de Guajara, the path to Vilaflor follows a long descent through dense Canarian pine forests. A stop at the Mirador de Los Escurriales is a must, where a spectacular view opens up over the Paisaje Lunar — a peculiar volcanic landscape with an otherworldly appearance.
The trail passes the ruins of the Casa de Marrubial, an abandoned old farmhouse, and crosses the Barranco de Las Mesas on its descent southwards.
Vilaflor, perched at 1,400 metres above sea level, holds the distinction of being the highest village in the Canary Islands. A welcoming hotel with Spa awaits there to help restore the energy still needed for tackling the final stage of the GR 131.
17.2 km | +505 m / -1,165 m
+ Hotel Rural El Tejar & SPA (Vilaflor)
DAY 7
Stage 6: Vilaflor – Villa de Arona
In front of the Iglesia de San Pedro in Vilaflor, the GR 131 resumes its course towards the sea along Calle Los Molinos. The Ermita de San Roque offers splendid views as the trail climbs gently into the Corona Forestal Natural Park.
After two kilometres, a long descent begins, crossing the Ifonche Protected Landscape and alternating between pine forest and cultivated terraces. After crossing the Barranco de Las Goteras over the Guayero bridge, the path enters an area bursting with flowers.
The Ifonche area was once a grain-producing region and the stone threshing floors that line the trail are still plentiful today. But before reaching Arona, the route enters the Barranco del Infierno Special Nature Reserve, from where the islands of La Gomera and La Palma can be seen, along with Adeje and Los Cristianos.
Roque del Conde, rising to 1,001 metres to the right of the path, signals the end of this final stage as we arrive at the Villa de Arona, just over 2 km away.

ABOUT THE GUANCHES
The Guanches were the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands until the arrival of the Spaniards. The Guanche population is of Berber origin, and it is assumed that they arrived on the islands around 1800 years ago. They developed differently on each island, so they have been given different names depending on the island: Benahoritas on La Palma; Bimbaches on El Hierro; Guanches on Tenerife and La Gomera…
Their way of life and customs were similar: they lived by herding, berry picking and local fishing. They lived in caves and did not know how to use metals. They did not sail, so there was no interaction between the tribes on the different islands.
In their journeys on foot with their herds, they used paths and trails previously marked by the animals. They used these trails to reach places suitable for grazing, crossed deep ravines and maintained relations with the various menceyatos of each island.
Today these trails are for the enjoyment of contemporary hikers and have technical designations such as GR 130 or GR 131. But we, in homage to those hardened hikers of the past, prefer to call them…

Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 6 stages it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.
Trails
The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. You will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.
We recommend
Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
You can book at any date!

TENERIFE has two airports: Los Rodeos airport in the north (TFN), close to the capital, is ideal for those staying in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Laguna or Puerto de La Cruz or for those intending to connect with a local flight to other islands.

However, international flights mainly arrive at Reina Sofía Airport, located to the south (TFS). This airport is close to the port of Los Cristianos and the tourist centres in the south. It is the most convenient airport if you want to travel to the islands of La Gomera or El Hierro.
