ABOUT THE GUANCHES

The Guanches were the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands until the arrival of the Spaniards. The Guanche population is of Berber origin and it is assumed that they arrived on the islands around 1800 years ago. They developed differently on each island, so they have been given different names depending on the island: Benahoritas on La Palma; Bimbaches on El Hierro; Guanches on Tenerife and La Gomera…

But their way of life and customs were similar: they lived by herding, berry picking and local fishing. They lived in caves and did not know how to use metals. They did not sail, so there was no interaction between the tribes on the different islands.

In their journeys on foot with their herds, they used paths and trails previously marked by the animals. They used these trails to reach places suitable for grazing, crossed deep ravines and maintained relations with the various menceyatos of each island.

Today these trails are for the enjoyment of contemporary hikers and have technical designations such as GR 130 or GR 131. But we, in homage to those hardened hikers of the past, prefer to call them…

1st stage:  San Sebastián - Mirador de Los Roques

From Playa de San Sebastián, the GR 131 leaves the city behind to enter the Barranco de Tajinastes ravine. Gradually the path ascends along a flank of endless abandoned terraces.
After reaching the Degollada de Peraza, the path advances towards the summit, passing the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves and entering the leafy forest mass.
The first of the spectacular rocks now appears on the left: Roque de Agando, a basalt rock colossus standing between two deep ravines. A little further on we reach the Mirador de Los Roques from where we can enjoy beautiful views of the Pico del Teide, the vast sea of clouds that spreads over La Gomera and the different rocks: Ojila and Agando. Return to San Sebastian by regular bus, line 1 or 3.

Trekking La Gomera y el Roque Agando2nd stage:  Mirador de Los Roques - Las Hayas

After a short transfer, return to the Mirador de Los Roques viewpoint to resume the GR 131 in the direction of Las Hayas. But first we must climb to the highest point of La Gomera: the summit of Garajonay, at an altitude of 1,487 metres.
With a 360-degree view, the summit of Garajonay reveals the immense green mantle that covers the whole island and that today constitutes the Garajonay National Park.
Now the path descends towards Igualero, bordering the park to the south. At the viewpoint of the same name we enjoy extraordinary views towards Playa Santiago. And through the Barranco de Erque ravine the route takes us first to Chipude and finally to Las Hayas, after crossing the Barranco del Agua ravine.
The Jardín de Las Hayas is an austere but pleasant inn created by the descendants of Doña Efigenia. This cheerful nonagenarian was the precursor of a famous inn where the best stews of the island were tasted.

senderismo en La Gomera en un pequeño grupo con guía3rd stage:  Las Hayas - Vallehermoso

Today's stage crosses the heart of the Garajonay National Park, on a route that enters the permanent fog and extreme vegetation. On reaching the north face, the GR 131 trail begins its descent through the Barranco de La Cuesta ravine towards Vallehermoso...
The path is dotted with rural dwellings and small vegetable gardens until it reaches the La Encantadora dam. The path surrounds it and suddenly there is the sight of Roque Cano, a gigantic monolith at the foot of Vallehermoso.
As its name suggests, Vallehermoso is an idyllic, sunny enclave that exudes peace and tranquillity. It is the end point of the GR 131. The valley that gives its name to this town leads to the sea, where there is a cove beach with views of La Palma. An ideal place to recover your strength before tackling the last two stages of the Camino del Guanche.

Apart from relaxation, what else does Vallehermoso have to offer? With only 3000 inhabitants, Vallehermoso has neither cinemas nor discotheques nor any other kind of entertainment typical of tourist places.
However, it has good places where you can eat excellent food. The harmony of the place and its pleasant climate invite contemplation and relaxation. It is a good place to overlap on the beach, rest and regain strength for the next stages.

La Gomera senderos por Garajonay GR1314th stage:  Vallehermoso - Agulo

Today's stage follows the route of the GR 132, from Vallehermoso to Agulo, in the north of La Gomera. We will skirt the Roque Cano, which rises majestically next to the path as we leave the town.
The path climbs up to the Cruz del Tierno, almost 800 metres above the sea, and heads eastwards, crossing a myriad of hamlets. After passing the Las Rosas Dam, the path reaches the Garajonay Park Visitor Centre, Juego de Bolas.
Already on a clear descent, the GR 132 continues its course until it reaches the Mirador de Abrantes, an extraordinary viewpoint perched on the edge of the cliff. There is a spectacular view over one of the most beautiful villages in the Canary Islands: Agulo. From there, the zigzagging path descends the hillside with the image of Pico del Teide as a backdrop.

The Barranco del Cedro is home to the beautiful twin rocks of Pedro and Petra, photogenic subjects for Instagram. The path climbs steeply up a stepped path until it reaches a spectacular waterfall.
A little further on, the first houses of the hamlet of El Cedro appear. Next to a small campsite you will find a place to have a good meal before continuing along the route. The path now enters the laurel forest, a part of the National Park with hundred-year-old trees and exquisite vegetation.

According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.

      Singles

The program is suitable for single travelers, although it is subject to an additional charge.

      Luggage transfer

We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
