The Guanches were the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands until the arrival of the Spaniards. The Guanche population is of Berber origin, and it is assumed that they arrived on the islands around 1800 years ago. They developed differently on each island, so they have been given different names depending on the island: Benahoritas on La Palma; Bimbaches on El Hierro; Guanches on Tenerife and La Gomera…
Their way of life and customs were similar: they lived by herding, berry picking and local fishing. They lived in caves and did not know how to use metals. They did not sail, so there was no interaction between the tribes on the different islands.
In their journeys on foot with their herds, they used paths and trails previously marked by the animals. They used these trails to reach places suitable for grazing, crossed deep ravines and maintained relations with the various menceyatos of each island.
Today these trails are for the enjoyment of contemporary hikers and have technical designations such as GR 130 or GR 131. But we, in homage to those hardened hikers of the past, prefer to call them…

Day 2
1st stage: San Sebastián - Mirador de Los Roques
From Playa de San Sebastián, the GR 131 leaves the city behind to enter the Barranco de Tajinastes ravine. Gradually the path ascends along a flank of endless abandoned terraces.
After reaching the Degollada de Peraza, the path advances towards the summit, passing the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves and entering the leafy forest mass.
The first of the spectacular rocks now appears on the left: Roque de Agando, a basalt rock colossus standing between two deep ravines. A little further on, we reach the Mirador de Los Roques from where we can enjoy beautiful views of the Pico del Teide, the vast sea of clouds that spreads over La Gomera and the different rocks: Ojila and Agando. Return to San Sebastian by regular bus, line 1 or 3.

Day 3
2nd stage: Mirador de Los Roques - Chipude
After a short transfer, return to the Mirador de Los Roques viewpoint to resume the GR 131 in the direction of Las Hayas. But first we must climb to the highest point of La Gomera: the summit of Garajonay, at an altitude of 1,487 metres.
With a 360-degree view, the summit of Garajonay reveals the immense green mantle that covers the whole island and that today constitutes the Garajonay National Park.
Now the path descends towards Igualero, bordering the park to the south. At the viewpoint of the same name we enjoy extraordinary views towards Playa Santiago. And finally, through the Barranco de Erque ravine the route takes us first to Chipude after crossing the Barranco del Agua.

Day 4
3rd stage: Chipude - Vallehermoso
Today's stage crosses the heart of the Garajonay National Park, on a route that enters the permanent fog and extreme vegetation. On reaching the north face, the GR 131 trail begins its descent through the Barranco de La Cuesta ravine towards Vallehermoso...
The path is dotted with rural dwellings and small vegetable gardens until it reaches the La Encantadora dam. The path goes around it and suddenly there is the sight of Roque Cano, a gigantic monolith at the foot of Vallehermoso.
As its name suggests, Vallehermoso is an idyllic, sunny enclave that exudes peace and tranquillity. It is the end point of the GR 131. The valley that gives its name to this town leads to the sea, where there is a cove beach with views of La Palma. An ideal place to recover your strength before tackling the last two stages of the Camino del Guanche.

Day 5 - Departure or Extension to one week
4th stage: Vallehermoso - Hermigua
Today's stage follows the route of the GR 132, from Vallehermoso to Hermigua, through the north of La Gomera. After skirting the imposing Roque Cano, rising majestically next to the path, the route heads eastwards in a continuous ascent.

After passing the Cruz del Tierno, almost 800 metres above sea level, the path leaves behind an endless number of hamlets until it reaches the Visitor Centre of the Garajonay Park, Juego de Bolas.
Further on you will reach the Mirador de Abrante, a spectacular hanging viewpoint with a glass floor, going down to Agulo, one of the most beautiful villages of the Canary Islands and considered the most beautiful by the Times in 2024.
Then the trail heads towards the cliff, descending by the beach of Hermigua and ending at your next accommodation.

Day 6
5th stage: Hermigua - Imada
Today the path ascends by the PR LG 3 towards El Cedro up to the Alto de Garajonay, the highest point of La Gomera. Then it descends to Imada, a beautiful village in a sunny valley on the south side of the island.
From Hermigua a stepped path leaves behind the beautiful twin rocks of Pedro and Petra, passing by a spectacular waterfall and reaching the hamlet of El Cedro.
Now the route goes into the laurel forest, a part of the National Park with centenary trees and exquisite vegetation.
After reaching the Alto del Contadero, you go up to the Alto de Garajonay (1.484 mts) and little by little you will descend towards the south until you reach Imada.

Day 7
6th stage: Imada - Playa Santiago
Today's route continues along the GR 132 downhill from Imada to Playa Santiago, a fishing enclave and seaport in the south of the island. From there, you will board the Benchi Express of Fred Olsen to go to San Sebastián de La Gomera.
A last stage descends steadily until reaching the ravine of Playa Santiago. A sunny route with extraordinary views that climbs next to the sea.
The route in mini-ferry has a duration of 15 minutes and allows you to discover the spectacular cliffs of the south of the island, from the sea.

Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 6 stages from GR 131 & GR 132, it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.

The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. In addition to the detailed map of La Gomera, you will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.

Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.

To get to LA GOMERA you need to fly to TENERIFE. From there you can connect to La Gomera with Fred Olsen or Naviera Armas Fast-Ferry (50 minutes - 6 daily frequencies).
Although the island of Tenerife has two airports, the most suitable is Reina Sofia Airport (TFS) in the south, closer to Los Cristianos harbor.
