ABOUT THE GUANCHES

The Guanches were the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands until the arrival of the Spaniards. The Guanche population is of Berber origin and it is assumed that they arrived on the islands around 1800 years ago. They developed differently on each island, so they have been given different names depending on the island: Benahoritas on La Palma; Bimbaches on El Hierro; Guanches on Tenerife and La Gomera…

But their way of life and customs were similar: they lived by herding, berry picking and local fishing. They lived in caves and did not know how to use metals. They did not sail, so there was no interaction between the tribes on the different islands.

In their journeys on foot with their herds, they used paths and trails previously marked by the animals. They used these trails to reach places suitable for grazing, crossed deep ravines and maintained relations with the various menceyatos of each island.

Today these trails are for the enjoyment of contemporary hikers and have technical designations such as GR 130 or GR 131. But we, in homage to those hardened hikers of the past, prefer to call them…

      Day 2

1st stage:  San Sebastián - Mirador de Los Roques

From Playa de San Sebastián, the GR 131 leaves the city behind to enter the Barranco de Tajinastes ravine. Gradually the path ascends along a flank of endless abandoned terraces.
After reaching the Degollada de Peraza, the path advances towards the summit, passing the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves and entering the leafy forest mass.
The first of the spectacular rocks now appears on the left: Roque de Agando, a basalt rock colossus standing between two deep ravines. A little further on we reach the Mirador de Los Roques from where we can enjoy beautiful views of the Pico del Teide, the vast sea of clouds that spreads over La Gomera and the different rocks: Ojila and Agando. Return to San Sebastian by regular bus, line 1 or 3.

Trekking La Gomera y el Roque Agando 2nd stage:  Mirador de Los Roques - Las Hayas

After a short transfer, return to the Mirador de Los Roques viewpoint to resume the GR 131 in the direction of Las Hayas. But first we must climb to the highest point of La Gomera: the summit of Garajonay, at an altitude of 1,487 metres.
With a 360-degree view, the summit of Garajonay reveals the immense green mantle that covers the whole island and that today constitutes the Garajonay National Park.
Now the path descends towards Igualero, bordering the park to the south. At the viewpoint of the same name we enjoy extraordinary views towards Playa Santiago. And through the Barranco de Erque ravine the route takes us first to Chipude and finally to Las Hayas, after crossing the Barranco del Agua ravine.
The Jardín de Las Hayas is an austere but pleasant inn created by the descendants of Doña Efigenia. This cheerful nonagenarian was the precursor of a famous inn where the best stews of the island were tasted.

      Day 4

senderismo en La Gomera en un pequeño grupo con guía 3rd stage:  Las Hayas - Vallehermoso

Today's stage crosses the heart of the Garajonay National Park, on a route that enters the permanent fog and extreme vegetation. On reaching the north face, the GR 131 trail begins its descent through the Barranco de La Cuesta ravine towards Vallehermoso...
The path is dotted with rural dwellings and small vegetable gardens until it reaches the La Encantadora dam. The path surrounds it and suddenly there is the sight of Roque Cano, a gigantic monolith at the foot of Vallehermoso.
As its name suggests, Vallehermoso is an idyllic, sunny enclave that exudes peace and tranquillity. It is the end point of the GR 131. The valley that gives its name to this town leads to the sea, where there is a cove beach with views of La Palma. An ideal place to recover your strength before tackling the last two stages of the Camino del Guanche.

La Gomera Vallehermoso senderismo Departure or Extension to one week

In case you have decided to extend your stay to a week, today will be a day of rest in the beautiful village of Vallehermoso, before tackling the next two walks. But what does Vallehermoso have to offer, apart from beauty and relaxation? With only 3000 inhabitants, Vallehermoso has neither cinemas nor discotheques nor any other kind of entertainment typical of tourist places.
However, it has good places where you can eat excellent food. The harmony of the place and its pleasant climate invite contemplation and relaxation. It is a good place to overlap on the beach, rest and regain strength for the next stages.

La Gomera senderos por Garajonay GR131 4th stage:  Vallehermoso - Agulo

Today's stage follows the route of the GR 132, from Vallehermoso to Agulo, in the north of La Gomera. We will skirt the Roque Cano, which rises majestically next to the path as we leave the town.
The path climbs up to the Cruz del Tierno, almost 800 metres above the sea, and heads eastwards, crossing a myriad of hamlets. After passing the Las Rosas Dam, the path reaches the Garajonay Park Visitor Centre, Juego de Bolas.
Already on a clear descent, the GR 132 continues its course until it reaches the Mirador de Abrantes, an extraordinary viewpoint perched on the edge of the cliff. There is a spectacular view over one of the most beautiful villages in the Canary Islands: Agulo. From there, the zigzagging path descends the hillside with the image of Pico del Teide as a backdrop.

The Barranco del Cedro is home to the beautiful twin rocks of Pedro and Petra, photogenic subjects for Instagram. The path climbs steeply up a stepped path until it reaches a spectacular waterfall.
A little further on, the first houses of the hamlet of El Cedro appear. Next to a small campsite you will find a place to have a good meal before continuing along the route. The path now enters the laurel forest, a part of the National Park with hundred-year-old trees and exquisite vegetation.

        ACCOMMODATION

        Subject to availability:

        HOTEL TORRE DEL CONDE

In the capital of La Gomera, San Sebastian, this hotel is located in front of a beautiful park where we find the historic Torre del Conde. In the area surrounding the hotel, a swarm of pedestrian streets offer an interesting range of gastronomic and leisure activities. The historic centre of the city offers old buildings that reflect the time when Christopher Columbus visited the island on his voyage to the New World.

The rooms enjoy views of the park; they are well equipped for the enjoyment of two nights in La Gomera and enjoy all the necessary tranquillity, despite the hustle and bustle of the city.

The hotel cafeteria is located on the ground floor for breakfast.

        JARDIN DE LAS HAYAS

The legendary Doña Efigenia was the forerunner of this rural accommodation. Today, her descendants have lovingly equipped it, offering idyllic overnight stays while following the gastronomic trajectory of the centenarian Efigenia. Several cottages make up this small complex in a romantic setting.

Simple but exquisitely decorated rooms, reflecting the rural style of La Gomera. In a garden setting where carefully tended plants and flowers live up to their name: Jardín de Las Hayas.

And don't forget to try the "almogrote", a spread made from fresh cheese and spicy red mojo sauce that has brought well-deserved fame to its original creator: Doña Efigenia.

        HOTEL RURAL TRIANA

Vallehermoso, in the sunny northwest of La Gomera, is the location of this small rural hotel with 11 rooms. The building was an old manor house that has been carefully restored. It has adequate and comfortable facilities and a cafeteria in the pedestrian area.

Warm wooden floors and carefully decorated rooms create the ambience in every room. Vallehermoso, with a population of just 3,000, is a haven of peace in a beautiful, sunny valley. The municipality is located just over 150 metres above the sea and enjoys a pleasant climate all year round.

        HOTEL VILLA HERMIGUA

A traditional style rural hotel located in the municipality "with the best climate in the world" (at least that's how the sign that a mayor placed at the entrance of the village years ago reads).

The rural hotel Villa Hermigua is a simple but clean and dignified accommodation, offering bed and breakfast in a typical rural atmosphere.

The rooms have beautiful views of the valley of Hermigua, in an environment of pure nature. With bathroom, television and built-in wardrobe, the rooms offer all you need for a short stay. They are well furnished and well maintained.

        Parador La Gomera

        PARADOR DE LA GOMERA

For the last night we offer spectacular accommodation: the Parador de La Gomera, in the capital, San Sebastián. A solid building, with colonial Colombian architecture, period furniture, interior courtyards and landscaped corners.

The Parador is located on a promontory in the city, with impressive views of the Pico del Teide, on the neighbouring island of Tenerife.

        Parador La Gomera

Pompously furnished rooms in large rooms. With wooden floors, generous balconies and stunning views of the Atlantic.

In retro style, the rooms at the Parador have exquisite furnishings and comfortable beds.

        Difficulty

To successfully achieve the 3 stages from GR 131, it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.

        Trails

The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. In addition to the detailed map of La Gomera, you will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.

Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.

        Singles

The program is suitable for single travelers, although it is subject to an additional charge.

        Luggage transfer

We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
