Lanzarote - Timanfaya Parque nacional

Montañas de Fuego

Nestled in the southwest of Lanzarote, within the Timanfaya National Park, are the Fire Mountains. In a spectacular volcanic environment you can discover the impressive craters of an eruption that took place almost 300 years ago, which lasted for 6 consecutive years and buried 20% of the island. Even today, temperatures of 400 ºC are still maintained just few metres below the volcanic soil. In the El Diablo Restaurant you can enjoy dishes cooked in the heat of the volcano.

Lanzarote - Cesar Manrique - Jameo de Agua

Jameos del Agua & Cueva de los Verdes

Two geological monuments of singular beauty. Los Jameos del Agua are a series of caves and underground tunnels that were formed from the volcanic activity caused by the eruption of the Corona Volcano, in the north of Lanzarote. Together with La Cueva de Los Verdes, it forms an impressive geological formation that was formed approximately 3,000 years ago. When the lava flows that flowed down the slopes of the volcano cooled and solidified, these spectacular cavities with small interior lakes were created, which are home to an endemic microfauna. Today both caves can be visited and represent the island's main tourist attraction.

Lanzarote - Fundación César Manrique

Cesar Manrique Foundation & Jardín de Cactus

Cesar Manrique was noted for his unique artistic and architectural style, combining nature, art and architecture in a harmonious way. He advocated the integration of art into its natural surroundings and his conviction that architecture and tourist development should respect the natural beauty and identity of Lanzarote. His Foundation, created in 1982 in his House-Museum in Tahíche, can be visited today. The Cactus Garden, in Guatiza, houses a great variety of species of cactus and succulent plants from different parts of the world.

Lanzarote - Playas de Papagayo y Los Ajaches

Papagayo Beaches

The beaches of Papagayo, in the south of Lanzarote, are considered to be among the most beautiful and spectacular on the island due to their unspoilt landscape, crystal clear waters and golden sand. They are part of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, a protected nature reserve that extends over almost 10 square kilometres. The Papagayo beaches are made up of four paradisiacal spaces: Playa de Papagayo, the largest of them all; Playa de Las Mujeres; La Caleta del Congrio and Playa de las Muelas.

ABOUT THE GUANCHES

The Guanches were the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands until the arrival of the Spanish. In Lanzarote, the Guanches were known as the “Mahos” and it is believed that their population was concentrated in the north and west of the island. The Mahos lived in caves and stone constructions, and were dedicated to agriculture and fishing. They developed differently on each island, so they have been given different names depending on the island: Benahoritas on La Palma; Bimbaches on El Hierro; Guanches on Tenerife and La Gomera…

The Guanche population is of Berber origin and it is assumed that they arrived on the islands some 1800 years ago. Today, some vestiges of the Guanche culture can be seen in Lanzarote, such as the rock engravings found in some caves and rocks, as well as in some aspects of popular culture and local craftsmanship.

Although the Guanche culture disappeared over time, its legacy can still be seen today in the music, gastronomy and traditions of the Canary Islands.

The trails once used by the Guanches are now enjoyed by contemporary hikers and have technical names such as GR 130 or Lanzarote trail GR 131. However, in homage to those hardened hikers of the past, we prefer to call them…

    Lanzarote trail GR 131

The island of Lanzarote is one of the seven main islands of the Canary archipelago. It is a volcanic island with a very unique landscape, huge black lava plains, craters and volcanic lava flows.

In addition to the spectacular Lanzarote trail GR 131 , the island has numerous tourist attractions, including the stunning white sandy beaches in the south with crystal clear waters: Playas de Papagayo.

It also has genuine architecture, with buildings designed by the local artist and architect, César Manrique, which combine traditional architecture with modern style.

Lanzarote is, in short, an island of unique natural beauty, rich culture and distinctive architecture, making it an ideal place for a relaxing holiday and an unforgettable tourist experience, walking the Lanzarote trail GR 131 .

Characteristic corners and enclaves of Lanzarote

Some of the places you should not miss if you visit the island are the following:

National Park Timanfaya: is a unique natural park with a lunar landscape of volcanic origin. Here you can see the volcano craters and lava and ash flows. You can also take a camel ride through the park.

Cueva de los Verdes: is a volcanic cave more than 6 km long with an impressive system of caves and underground galleries. Here you can enjoy a sound and light show that will take you through the geological history of the island.

Jameos del Agua: is a resort built in a volcanic cave with an impressive indoor lake, a botanical garden and a natural swimming pool. It is also home to a unique species of albino crab, found only on Lanzarote.

Mirador del Río: is a viewpoint built by César Manrique on the top of a cliff in the north of the island. From here you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby islands.

Fundación César Manrique: is a museum dedicated to the local artist and architect, César Manrique, which has a collection of art and a sample of his architectural work. You can also visit his house, which was built in a volcanic cave.

Playas de Papagayo: Lanzarote has many stunning beaches, but undoubtedly the most popular of them all is Playa de Papagayo, along with Playa Blanca, Famara and Caleta de Famara. All of them have crystal clear waters and black and white sands.

La Geria: is a unique wine-growing region where the vineyards are cultivated in pits dug out of the volcanic ash. Here you can enjoy a wine tasting and buy some of the local wines.

      Lanzarote-Haria-senderismo con NATOUR1st stage:  Orzola - Haría

After a 30-minute drive to Orzola, the hiking crossing of Lanzarote starts from the north of the island. The trail climbs up the slope of the Risco de Famara until it reaches the Mirador del Rio. The spectacular viewpoint created by Cesar Manrique offers a unique view over the island of La Graciosa.
From here, the path follows the edge of the Risco de Famara (some 700 metres above the sea), skirting the western flank of the ancient volcano of La Corona. The path to Haría is dotted with small vegetable gardens to supply the local population.
After passing Máguez, the Camino del Guanche starts a gentle descent towards the Valley of a Thousand Palm trees. Haría is located in the centre of this valley and enjoys sufficient humidity and a pleasant microclimate. Here we will find our next accommodation: Casa de Los Naranjos.

After climbing up through the valley of Haría we reach the Risco de Famara again with renewed views over its extensive beach. The GR 131 runs between the viewpoints of Risco and Cueva de Las Cabras until it reaches the Ermita de Las Nieves.
Now we start a long descent in a southerly direction until we reach the Ermita de San José. Shortly after, you will enter the Villa de Teguise. Founded in the 15th century, the Villa de Teguise has an important architectural ensemble. The main buildings include the Church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, the Convent of Santo Domingo, the Spinola Palace, the Casa Museo del Timple and the Casa-Museo del Emigrante Canario.

Today's stage runs through the central plain of Lanzarote, from the village of Teguise to Coníl. Along the way you will pass through some farming areas and some important towns like San Bartolomé, where you should not miss a visit to the Pasteleria Lolita.
Leaving San Bartolomé we go around the old volcanic cone of Montaña Guatisea, which separates it from the village of Montaña Blanca. A little further on, after rounding the Montaña Blanca, which gives its name to the village, we come to the Iglesia de la Candelaria, which begins the hamlet that forms the urban centre of Coníl.

Today's stage runs parallel to the Timanfaya National Park, heading south. This is a densely populated area with a myriad of houses scattered around. The Camino del Guanche runs in a straight line through Macher, and in some sections parallel to the main road.
Leaving the Montaña de Tinasoria behind, the GR 131 begins to ascend towards Las Casitas, skirting the southern flank of the Caldera Riscada. We are now entering an arid and mountainous area where the Los Ajaches mountain range begins. This is the oldest part geologically and also the sunniest.

The last stage in Lanzarote will take you to Playa Blanca, a first class tourist enclave where the mark of economic progress is evident. The path climbs gently up the northern flank of the Los Ajaches mountain range until it reaches the village of Las Breñas.
Ancient lava fields follow one after the other until you reach Los Hervideros, a viewpoint from which you can observe the neighbouring islands of Lobos and Fuerteventura. A little further on, the first tourist developments appear, whose cloned houses follow one after the other in a never-ending infinity. Playa Blanca lies at our feet and its picturesque white sandy beach invites us to take a refreshing dip before our driver takes us back to Yaíza.

      Day off or beach day

It is worth taking a day without walking to visit the Timanfaya National Park, the nearby Tourist Centres or the Cesar Manrique Foundation in Tahiche. The wine-growing area of La Geria is also worth a visit.
El Golfo and Las Salinas de Janubio, as well as the Hervideros del Agua, all of which are very close to Yaíza, require a separate mention.
But a quiet day of sun and beach is not a bad thing for anyone. The best option is to visit the Papagayo Beaches in Playa Blanca. A bathing paradise that has managed to remain unscathed by the onslaught of tourist development.

        Hotel Lancelot - Lanzarote

        HOTEL LANCELOT

The Hotel Lancelot is located on the seafront, with great panoramic views. All around you will find an extensive gastronomic offer in a relaxed and playful atmosphere. And directly in front of the hotel there is a quiet white sandy beach where you can take a refreshing dip after the first walks.

The hotel's deck terrace is equipped with a solarium and swimming pool. Its rooms have been recently renovated, offering a modern and very comfortable look. Arrecife is undoubtedly the ideal place to start   Lanzarote GR 131.

        Hotel Lancelot - Lanzarote

Directly in front of the hotel is the Playa del Reducto, with fine white sand and clean, calm waters. It is a very popular place for the locals who take advantage of their leisure time to go for a swim or play sports on the long boulevard that runs along the beach.

        HOTEL CASA DE LOS NARANJOS

An old manor house situated in the municipality of Haría, in the north. The Hotel Emblemático Casa de Los Naranjos has been exquisitely restored and offers the authentic taste of the old, but with modern standards of comfort. Haría is the end point of the first stage and this hotel allows you to regain your strength while enjoying a splendid atmosphere.

The bright rooms are spacious and comfortable. Luxuriously decorated and furnished, in the incomparable setting of the village of Haría, the place chosen by the artist Cesar Manrique to live his final years in Lanzarote. A quiet corner to relax in the valley of a thousand palm trees

        HOTEL CASA DE LAS FLORES

...And on arriving at the Villa de Teguise we come across a unique accommodation: La Casa de Las Flores. It is a small hotel set within the framework of an old colonial house, with a multitude of details and a minimalist appearance that will conquer the spirit of its guests.

The rooms occupy the spaces of this old house in a harmonious but at the same time informal way, achieving a spectacular result. The Villa de Teguise was the first capital of Lanzarote and has a great historical heritage that is mainly reflected in its old mansions and palaces.

The architecture of the Hotel Casa de Las Flores keeps alive the character of a time when Lanzarote was the spearhead for the colonisation of the Canary Islands. It has small interior courtyards with abundant floral vegetation that invite meditation and rest after a day of great activity.

        HOTELITO LA ERA

A small family-run hotel in Yaíza, a beautiful village in the sunny south of Lanzarote, very close to the wine-growing area of La Geria, the Timanfaya National Park, the Papagayo Beaches in Playa Blanca and El Golfo and the Janubio Salt Flats. A pleasant and quiet rural environment but easily accessible to any corner of the island.

Yaíza is a small and pretty village with a rural appearance and very peaceful surroundings. An ideal place to rest after the day's activities and find peace and quiet.

The few rooms offer an exquisite atmosphere and complete equipment. The one-storey building recreates traditional Lanzarote architecture, with white walls, wooden pergolas and interior patios with a profusion of multicoloured plants.

        Difficulty

According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.

The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. In addition to the detailed map of Lanzarote, you will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.

        We recommend

        Luggage transfer

We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
