ABOUT THE GUANCHES
The Guanches were the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands until the arrival of the Spanish. In Lanzarote, the Guanches were known as the “Mahos” and it is believed that their population was concentrated in the north and west of the island. The Mahos lived in caves and stone constructions, and were dedicated to agriculture and fishing. They developed differently on each island, so they have been given different names depending on the island: Benahoritas on La Palma; Bimbaches on El Hierro; Guanches on Tenerife and La Gomera…
The Guanche population is of Berber origin and it is assumed that they arrived on the islands some 1800 years ago. Today, some vestiges of the Guanche culture can be seen in Lanzarote, such as the rock engravings found in some caves and rocks, as well as in some aspects of popular culture and local craftsmanship.
Although the Guanche culture disappeared over time, its legacy can still be seen today in the music, gastronomy and traditions of the Canary Islands.
The trails once used by the Guanches are now enjoyed by contemporary hikers and have technical names such as GR 130 or Lanzarote trail GR 131. However, in homage to those hardened hikers of the past, we prefer to call them…

Characteristic corners and enclaves of Lanzarote
Some of the places you should not miss if you visit the island are the following:
National Park Timanfaya: is a unique natural park with a lunar landscape of volcanic origin. Here you can see the volcano craters and lava and ash flows. You can also take a camel ride through the park.
Cueva de los Verdes: is a volcanic cave more than 6 km long with an impressive system of caves and underground galleries. Here you can enjoy a sound and light show that will take you through the geological history of the island.
Jameos del Agua: is a resort built in a volcanic cave with an impressive indoor lake, a botanical garden and a natural swimming pool. It is also home to a unique species of albino crab, found only on Lanzarote.
