Difficulty
This program is for you if you usually do sports and have a good physical background; if you can walk steep slopes up and down and don’t have health problems; if you love nature, are environmentally friendly and are a regular hiker.
Throughout the year there are plenty of opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city and spend a long weekend in La Palma, walking the most emblematic routes. You can also discover the new crater from the recent eruption of Cumbre Vieja. The lava only damaged a small strip of the island, although it was overpopulated and therefore caused a great deal of damage.
Traditionally, La Palma has been an island that has distinguished itself for its beauty and extraordinary nature. And that is why it is also known for its spectacular hiking routes. Three are the most characteristic routes that you should never miss when visiting the island. And these three can be visited during a long weekend in La Palma.
Self guided walking tours for a weekend in La Palma
The Marcos and Cordero Springs
From the neighborhood of Las Lomadas, in the northeast of the island, a winding track makes its way up to Casa del Monte. From there you must walk along a canal until you reach the Marcos and Cordero springs. The path continues downhill towards Los Tilos. The forest of Los Tilos, with its spectacular vegetation, is the culmination of an interesting route that is very appropriate for the summer season.
The Volcanoes Route
The Cumbre Vieja mountain range is the setting for this spectacular hike. The route runs well above where the new volcano erupted. It is a 17-kilometre trail that reaches high altitudes. It starts at Refugio del Pilar, 1450 metres above sea level, and climbs up to 2000 metres. The entire Cumbre Vieja is a huge volcano with countless craters. There have been 7 eruptions on this summit in recent history. The last volcano erupted only a few months ago.
The Caldera de Taburiente
It is one of the largest erosion craters in the world. With a diameter of 10 km and a perimeter of 28 km, La Caldera was declared a National Park in 1954. It is an area where tobacco used to be grown on several private estates. The origin of these properties date to the time of the conquest in 1493. The conquistador Alonso Fernando de Lugo appropriated the richest areas in compensation for his conquests.
A weekend on La Palma is a relatively short period of time. But with the three proposed routes you will get a complete overview of our island.

Day 3
Volcanoes Route
The second hike happens in a geologically active region of recent creation: the Volcanoes Route (2). After a short transfer to the Refugio del Pilar, your hike points towards the southern mountain range, crossing a spectacular volcanic landscape until reaching Fuencaliente. You enjoy majestic perspectives on both sides of the island, in a hike of 17 km

Day 4
Caldera de Taburiente
The Caldera de Taburiente (3) is possibly the queen of all routes on La Palma. This space was declared a National Park in 1954 and your hike takes place within an erosion crater of 28 km diameter located in the very heart of La Palma. The hike, in permanent descent, offers different and spectacular landscapes along 15 km.

Additional overnights
It is also possible to book some additional days, before or after the hiking week, or an additional week to relax.
Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 3 walks it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.
Trails
The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. In addition to the detailed map of La Palma, you will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.
We recommend
Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
You can book at any date!
If you can't find a suitable direct flight, try flying to TENERIFE or to GRAN CANARIA. From there, you can easily reach LA PALMA by local flights or ferry. Fly to LA PALMA (SPC) from Tenerife (TFN) or from Gran Canaria (LPA) with BINTERor CANARYFLY
but if your flight lands at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), you may prefer to combine it with a nice fast-ferry sea crossing (3 hours) from Los Cristianos harbour. FRED OLSEN connects the islands of Tenerife and La Palma twice a day.
