What to see in La Palma?
Throughout the year there are plenty of opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city and spend a long weekend in La Palma, walking the most emblematic routes. You can also discover the new crater from the recent eruption of Cumbre Vieja. The lava only damaged a small strip of the island, although it was overpopulated and therefore caused a great deal of damage.
Traditionally, La Palma has been an island that has distinguished itself for its beauty and extraordinary nature. And that is why it is also known for its spectacular hiking routes. Three are the most characteristic routes that you should never miss when visiting the island. And these three can be solved in a long weekend in La Palma.
Self guided walking tours for a weekend in La Palma
The Marcos and Cordero Springs
From the neighbourhood of Las Lomadas, in the northeast of the island, a winding track winds its way up to Casa del Monte. From there you have to walk along a canal until you reach the Marcos and Cordero springs. The path continues downhill towards Los Tilos. The forest of Los Tilos, with its spectacular vegetation, is the culmination of an interesting route that is very appropriate for the summer season.
The Volcanoes RouteRuta de Los Volcanes
The Cumbre Vieja is the setting for this spectacular hike. The route runs well above where the new volcano erupted. It is a 17-kilometre trail that reaches high altitudes. It starts at Refugio del Pilar, 1450 metres above sea level, and climbs up to 2000 metres. The entire Cumbre Vieja is a huge volcano with countless craters. There have been 7 eruptions on this summit in recent history. The last volcano erupted only a few months ago.
The Caldera de Taburiente
It is one of the largest erosion craters in the world. With a diameter of 10 km and a perimeter of 28 km, La Caldera was declared a National Park in 1954. It is an area where tobacco used to be grown on several private estates. The origin of the property dates back to the time of the conquest in 1493. The adelantado Alonso Fernando de Lugo appropriated the richest areas in compensation for his conquest efforts.
A weekend on La Palma is a relatively short period of time. But with the three proposed routes you will get a complete overview of our island.
