ITINERARY
Day 1:
Arrival in Gran Canaria
…and transfer to the hotel located in the island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
+ Hotel Matilde (or similar – Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)
Day 2:
La Caldera de Bandama
A short transfer from Las Palmas takes you to the viewpoint of Pico de Bandama, 570 m high, with a stunning panorama over the entire northeast of Gran Canaria.
The Caldera de Bandama is the result of an eruptive process that culminated in a violent eruption some 4,000 years ago. It has very fertile soil which is today used for vine cultivation. This is a circular trail that ventures into the interior of the crater and returns to the Pico, skirting its entire perimeter.
After a gentle descent, the trail heads to the opposite side, where we take in the sight of the imposing volcanic walls that plunge down to the crater floor.
Today, in this area known as Monte Lentiscal, several wineries take advantage of the richness of the volcanic soil and the protection of the hillsides to produce wines of notable quality.

+ Hotel Matilde (or similar – Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)
Day 3:
Ascent to Pico de Las Nieves from San Bartolomé
Today we transfer to San Bartolomé de Tirajana, nestled in a sunny ravine facing south. From there we begin the ascent to the highest peak in Gran Canaria: Pico de Las Nieves. The trail is lined with almond and olive trees. And as we climb, the vegetation gradually gives way to a pine forest.
The ascent follows an ancient Royal Road that zigzags up to the impressive Riscos de Tirajana. To our left lies the Ventana del Nublo. And on the horizon, the spectacular Pico del Teide on the neighbouring island of Tenerife.
Spectacular views accompany us at every step until we reach Pico de las Nieves, at an altitude of 1,950 m above sea level.
10.8 km | +1,056 m / -83 m
+ Apto. Mirador del Almendro (or similar – Tejeda)
Day 4:
La Caldera de Tejeda
From the village of Fontanales we set off on our first route, heading towards Tejeda. A route that crosses an entire region of fertile pastures and beautiful pine forests. This is an ideal setting for livestock farming, whose milk has made the savoury cheeses of Gran Canaria famous.
The village of Tejeda sits right at the centre of the island of Gran Canaria, at 1,050 metres above sea level, surrounded by rugged peaks that form an ancient volcanic caldera.
The trail takes us to the top of these peaks, which enclose the entire perimeter of the caldera in a semicircle. And from the summit we can make out the iconic monoliths of Roque Bentayga and Roque Nublo, rising majestically above the peaks of Gran Canaria.
12.1 km | +688 m / -657 m
+ Apto. Mirador del Almendro (or similar – Tejeda)
Day 5:
La Fortaleza de Tirajana
The Fortaleza de Tirajana Route takes us back in time to understand the heroic resistance of the Canarian indigenous people against the brutal conquest of the island.
The trail passes through the famous fortress where the Guanches made their stand against the Spanish advance and put up fierce resistance until their tragic end.
A path that crosses the sun-drenched gorges of the south, passing picturesque hamlets such as El Sitio de Abajo and Sitio de Arriba, until reaching Santa Lucía de Tirajana, today renowned for its exquisite honey and olive oil production.
10.6 km | +367 m / -369 m
+ Apto. Mirador del Almendro (or similar – Tejeda)
Day 6:
Along the Water Route to Agaete
Today we transfer to El Junquillo, a small village in the northwest highlands. Water, indispensable for life, is stored in large dams and reservoirs that allow it to be distributed gradually to the various plantations across the entire northwest of Gran Canaria.
Our trail climbs gently to the Mirador de La Crucita. From there, following the course of the Barranco de La Coruña, we reach the Presa de las Hoyas, the Presa de Lugarejos and the Presa de Los Perez. Three consecutive reservoirs that provide abundant water for irrigating exotic crops.
Through the imposing Barranco de Agaete a steady descent begins, ending at the Hacienda de Las Longueras, a grand old manor house of spectacular colonial style.
15.4 km | +271 m / -1,265 m
+ Hotel Occidental Roca Negra (or similar – Agaete)
Day 7:
Firgas: the Barranco de Azuaje
Our final route ventures into one of the most lush and wild areas of Gran Canaria: the Barranco de Azuaje. From Firgas, a village known for its mineral water springs, the trail enters the Azuaje nature reserve, in a landscape thick with reed beds and willow groves, as well as ferns, laurel trees and other endemic plants.
The route is circular in nature. It ascends the ravine along its left side and descends along the right, now known as Barranco de la Virgen. Along the way we find numerous terraces devoted to the cultivation of orange and lemon trees. The final route ends by crossing the beautiful Paseo de Gran Canaria, arriving back in Firgas.

Walking Gran Canaria, Why?
Gran Canaria is a well known tourist destination due to the spectacular white sand beaches. But the distinctly rural character of the interior of Gran Canaria is much less well known.
In the mountains you will find ancestral trails that were used by the aborigines and later by the locals. Today, these paths open up the possibility to discover a natural paradise, still largely unknown.
The great variety of landscapes that Gran Canaria has to offer is another example of its rich biodiversity and excellent state of conservation. Walking in Gran Canaria means entering this world, which is still unknown to the vast majority of visitors to the island.
Remnants of volcanism
Gran Canaria is an island of ancient volcanic origin. Today there is no volcanic activity. However, ancient volcanism is clearly visible, both in the morphology of its basaltic rocks and in the remains of calderas or volcanic cones.
La Caldera de Tejera or La Caldera de Bandama are two good magnificent examples that can be appreciated while walking Gran Canaria.
Advantages of walking Gran Canaria in a organised way
The island of Gran Canaria is very large. Getting to and from the best routes takes time and effort. Inland roads are full of curves that make driving them an adventure.
For all these reasons, it is much more comfortable to join a self-guided program with all transfers included.
Nature of the island
Gran Canaria was conquered by the Spanish Empire between 1402 and 1496. Why did the conquest take so long? The original inhabitants, the Guanches, did not give in easily and took refuge in the rugged inner mountains. Some remote enclaves had to be besieged and fought hard. Today we can perfectly understand the affection of the aborigines for their island, walking through its mountains and enjoying its landscapes, hiking Gran Canaria in the annual Walking Gran Canaria Festival.

Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 6 Walks it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.
Trails
The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. You will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.
We recommend
Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
