Walking La Gomera HIGHLIGHT

Garajonay National Park
La Gomera, history and trails
On his voyages to the New Continent, Christopher Columbus used to stop in La Gomera to refuel and recharge his batteries before setting off on his Atlantic crossing. Who would have thought that 500 years later, walking La Gomera would be the object of desire of modern discoverers: hikers.
There are not many places in the world that, in such a small space, have such a rich and valuable natural ecosystem. Senderos La Gomera has recently been recognised as a Biosphere Reserve. It has a National Park of enormous botanical value and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
La Gomera, the last foothold for Columbus before crossing the unknown seas, is today an island appreciated by hikers from all over the world. An island where time seems to have stood still and which preserves extinct landscapes, vanished ways of life and forgotten legends. These coexist with charming settlements of multicoloured hamlets, whimsical manifestations of nature and a special light that varnishes the whole.
Walking La Gomera
This is an island of very ancient volcanic origin. The passage of time has allowed erosion to act, gradually diluting its contours. From its central plateau, rising 1300 metres above the sea, a system of deep ravines spreads out radially, reaching every corner of the island.
These ravines connect the villages and hamlets by the sea via winding paths. The paths ascend towards the central plateau, descending on the opposite side. Along the way, they reveal the island’s enormous biodiversity, both botanical and fauna.
The hiking routes on walking La Gomeraoffer unparalleled diversity. The laurel forests, ancient botanical remains from the Tertiary period, are plant relics from a distant past that have survived to the present day. The enormous palm groves in the southern valleys, besides their beauty, are useful for the island’s economy thanks to the palm honey. And the terraces and terraces on the northern slopes are cultivated in the traditional way with all kinds of products from the land.
All these diverse landscapes can be enjoyed by hiking through the ravines on the countless walking La Gomera hiking trails. In our one-week programme, we have selected the 5 most characteristic routes.
...and ownwards transfer to the hotel in the capital of the island, San Sebastián.
On your arrival you will find the necessary documentation, but we also offer you a video information call to discuss the details of this programme.

Day 2
Alto del Contadero to Hermigua
From the Alto del Contadero the PR LG 3 path takes you through dense laurel forests with vegetation typical of the Tertiary Era and envelops you in a magical-looking plant world.
The path descends steadily between twisted trunks and giant ferns until it reaches El Cedro, a village of just seven houses nestled in the laurel forest.
After the obligatory break and socialising with other hikers in the Las Vistas Restaurant, the descent continues through the Barranco del Cedro ravine, ending in Hermigua, a northern village with an agricultural tradition that boasts "the best climate in the world".

Day 3
From Agulo to Vallehermoso
Today's walk starts in the most unique village of La Gomera: Agulo. With superb views towards the island of Tenerife and its Pico del Teide, this picturesque village enjoys the honour of having been selected as one of the 11 most beautiful villages in Spain in 2021.
The climb up the Agulo cliff takes you to the Mirador de Abrante, an impressive overhanging viewpoint with breathtaking views of the Pico del Teide. The road crosses the most rural part of La Gomera, through small villages such as La Rosa. To the north the permanent silhouette of the island of La Palma is silhouetted against the horizon.
After reaching the highest point at Cruz del Tierno, the path begins a relentless descent to the foot of Roque Cano, a spectacular monolith and unique icon of Vallehermoso.

Day 4
Las Hayas - Valle Gran Rey
After a 40-minute drive to Las Hayas, an enclave of houses near the National Park famous for the stews at the inn of the legendary "Doña Efigenia", the trail takes you to Arure and begins a spectacular descent through the palm grove of Valle Gran Rey.
The upper part of the ravine is full of herds of goats, grazing peacefully in their protected enclosures. And as you go further down, the little houses are interspersed, forming an idyllic setting that ends next to the sea, in La Calera.
Valle Gran Rey was a stronghold of the Guanches in ancient times. Later it was the hippies who found their paradise in the valley. Today structured tourism has invaded the coastal areas, although a stroll through the narrow streets of La Calera brings back that feeling of the authentic flavour of a fishermen's quarter. ...And in Playa del Inglés you can enjoy a refreshing swim after your route through the south...

Day 5
El Guro gorge
The route starts directly from Valle Gran Rey up the ravine in the direction of the bohemian village of El Guro, where residents from all over Europe have found their centre of the world.
Its landscaped slopes and imposing basalt walls indicate the entrance to the Barranco de Arure ravine. Following the course of the stream, we ascend the narrow ravine. The path is somewhat tortuous and forces us to jump from stone to stone until we reach the beautiful waterfall. With a 15-metre waterfall, its jet of water invites us to take a refreshing bath before continuing along the return path.
The route returns along the same riverbed towards the Casa de la Seda. From there, we start the descent along the path that runs parallel to the road in the direction of Valle Gran Rey.

Day 6
Las Hayas - Vallehermoso
On the central plateau of La Gomera, covered by a blanket of lush vegetation, a trail of small villages stretches out at 1000 metres above sea level. Las Hayas, popularised by the centenarian Doña Efigenia, is the starting point of today's route.
On the first section of the route we remain at a constant altitude, walking northwards into the Garajonay National Park. The imposing laurel forests here form a magical setting that recreates prehistoric times.
Gradually the path descends, entering through the Barranco de la Cuesta ravine. After passing the Ermita del Carmen, the first houses and cultivated areas appear, with vineyards and fruit trees. We go round the La Encantadora Dam, a picturesque reservoir that supplies water to the whole of the north of La Gomera. Shortly after, we reach Vallehermoso after enjoying an idyllic rural setting, dotted with stone houses.

Day 7
Imada - Roque Agando
An impressive route along the sunny southern slopes of La Gomera. After a 40-minute transfer to the hamlet of Imada, we start walking along the PR LG 16.1, crossing several ravines up to El Azadoe.
After reaching Lo del Gato through a landscape full of palm trees, the ascent to the abandoned village of Benchijigua begins. The path then enters the leafy foothills of Roque Agando and begins a relentless ascent.
Roque Agando is a phenomenal monolith of basaltic rock that rises majestically in the centre of the island. Our route ends at an altitude of over 1200 metres, at the foot of this monolith.

Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 5 Walks it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.
Trails
The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. In addition to the detailed map of La Gomera, you will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.
We recommend
Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
You can book at any date!
