The Magic Island

La Gomera

Canary Islands
There are not many places in the world with the size of La Gomera (370 km²) that can develop its own language. Doing La Gomera walking holidays you will discover the silbo language, which transforms vowels and consonants into musical notes and is capable of overcoming cliffs, valleys, and all kinds of obstacles. Given the island’s orographic diversity it comes as no surprise that the Gomeran silbo was born here as a mean of communication.

La Gomera Hiking

Beyond its abundant natural spaces, there are no limits regarding what to do in La Gomera. There are many activities and unforgettable plans to enjoy and treasure forever.

Viewpoints

There is a network of viewpoints that stretches along the whole island, providing extraordinary panoramic views of its coasts, its mountains, its thick forests and much more. You can even see the other Atlantic Ocean islands like La Palma or Tenerife when the visibility is good.

The maritime space that separated Tenerife from La Gomera is ideal for observing different types of cetaceans swimming freely. They can be seen all year round, although the best time for this is from March to June. Among them, the most common are the pilot whale and the bottlenose dolphin.

Inland, for example, the village of Hermigua keeps a few secrets. It is said to have the best climate in the world. The valley in which is located is majestic, with all that vegetation, a jungle and banana trees stretching uncontrollably as far as the eye can see. The tiny houses scattered throughout the valley are also gorgeous. The Dominican convent of San Pedro Apóstol in the neighborhood of the same name, the gofio mill museum, the ethnographic museum or the old Hermigua davit are certainly worth a visit.

Culture and Cuisine

Talking about the culture and heritage of La Gomera inevitably involves talking about the silbo language, declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the repository of a form of communication that has transcended from gorge to gorge up to the present day. The inhabitants of La Gomera have recently undertaken important preservation work and continued to learn and preserve it, so its not lost.

Neither should we leave out other traditions inherited form the island’s ancient inhabitants, such the so called “drum dance” in which the participants play the chácaras a percussion instrument made of bone or wood, like the castanets but bigger, while jumping and spinning around.

Nor should we forget the island’s delicious gastronomic offer, which includes products like palm honey, made from the sap of the native palm tree and the main ingredient of numerous dishes, desserts and even drinks. Goat meat, watercress stew and almogrote (mojo with a density like pâté and made from a base of cured cheese) are some of the local delicacies.

And the wines also have denomination of origin, obtained through a lot of effort and dedication due to the complicated forms of the Gomeran terrain. That is why they have such a special and distinct flavor. Just like all the other products of La Gomera.

Don’t miss this unforgettable experience.

Natural spaces for La Gomera hiking holidays

A land of contrasts, like the whole of the Canary archipelago, reaches proportions that verge on the fantastic. From its lofty peaks to its small beaches of volcanic ash.

Garajonay National Park

It is named after the Garajonay peak, which at 1487 meters is the highest point on La Gomera. Apart from this, Garajonay is worth walking on during your trip on La Gomera. The laurel forest, which during the Tertiary period covered almost all of Europe, still reigns supreme in the park.

Valle Gran Rey

One of the most touristic areas, connected by ferry directly from Tenerife. With unparalleled beaches and its numerous restaurants to enjoy typical Gomeran dishes during your hiking holidays.

Los Órganos

It is no coincidence that this geological formation of volcanic origin is called like this. The group of natural columns is reminiscent of the pipes of an organ. Admiring them on a boat trip (best seen from the sea) is truly an impressive experience.

Alojera

In the west of La Gomera, next to Vallehermoso, 200 meters long and 40 meters wide of black sand welcome visitors. It is the beach of Alojera, a place like something out of a dream, nested between cliffs and reefs of unique beauty.

Lomo del Carretón

Speaking of cliffs, the Lomo del Carretón stands out for its tremendous beauty and its value, not only for its landscape but also for its geological and floral value. It is an experience for the senses and a significant source of geomorphological data.

Roque de Agando

Perhaps the most iconic natural monument on the island. A volcanic piton around 1250 meters high in the very heart of La Gomera, in the Benchijigua ravine.

Majona Natural Park

Natural Park since 1987, Site of Community Importance (SCI) of Majona and Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) of the Majona coast, its prehistoric forests, the large number of footpaths that run through it and the attraction of its geographical features make it a must-see place in La Gomera.

There are not many territories that, in a confined space as La Gomera, have such a rich and valuable natural ecosystem, recognized as a Biosphere Reserve, and declared a World Heritage Site and National Park. This was also the last stop for Christopher Columbus before embarking on this journey to the other side of the globe.

Time has stopped in La Gomera. Preserved extinct landscapes, rural customs and forgotten legends coexist with charming settlements of multicolored hamlets, whimsical manifestations of nature and a special light that varnishes the whole island.

      Must-visit places you can’t miss

        • Garajonay National Park, located in the heart of the island. A precious ecosystem where a great diversity of flora and fauna coexist in perfect harmony. Walking through this forest is a magical experience. Here you will find multiple trails, viewpoints, and recreational areas. In addition to a very well-equipped Visitors and Information Centre.
        • Natural Monument of Los Órganos, located on the north coast of the municipality of Vallehermoso. It is a beautiful cliff whose shape resembles that of an organ, as its name suggests. An ideal place for whale and dolphin watching.
        • Fortaleza de Chipude, this great natural monument is 1242m high. One of the most popular scenic symbols of the island. Located in Vallehermoso itself. At its summit we find one of the most important archaeological sites on La Gomera. It is though that this imposing mountain was a sacred place for the ancient inhabitants of the island.
        • Valle de Gran Rey, a village set in a narrow valley between palm groves and cultivated terraces. The result is a beautiful landscape. That is why César Manrique, the famous artist from Lanzarote could not resist its charm. And he made one of his masterpieces by building the Mirador Palmarejo, from where we can enjoy incredible views of this great valley. And not to mention those spectacular sunsets.
