Day 2
GRAN CANARIA – Barranco de Azuaje: Firgas
The driver will bring you today to “Firgas” where you will start with a circular walk. Thi hike begins and ended in the worthwhile pretty town where a fountain splashes in the plaza, and a waterfall rushes down the “Paseo de Canarias”, a stepped promenade framed by flower beds. From a water-rich town into an evergreen canyon, the “Barranco de Azuaje” is a gorge surrounded by high steep walls with almost jungle-like vegetation made of bamboo cane and bay tree, willow and fern. Further up, it widens to the “Barranco de la Virgen” (Valley of the Virgin), where oranges and lemons grow.
Your return to the hotel in “Las Palmas de Gran Canaria” will be done with regular bus.
Today’s tour takes you to the highest peaks of Gran Canaria.
After an hour’s transfer you reach the viewpoint of “Pico de Las Nieves” (1950 m.) and enjoy one of the most beautiful views over the island and also the neighbour island of Tenerife and “Pico del Teide”. Your hike starts with light descends and ascends until you reach the “Campanario”, the second highest mountain on the island. Now you folow the walk towards “Ventana del Nublo”, a strange erosion formation in the shape of an arch through which you can see the “Roque Nublo”.
The trail continues right up to the “Roque Nublo” itself, an enormous monolith in the centre of the island and a trade mark for Gran Canaria.
The path now descends through large and beautiful pine forests with various species of local broom until you reach the “Llanos de la Pez” where the driver awaits for you and will bring you back to the hotel in “Las Palmas de Gran Canaria”.
Transfer to the airport ( 30 min.) and flight departure to the neighbor island La Palma (NT309 LPA / SPC 0720 0810). On arrival, taxi transfer to the next accommodation for check in “Santa Cruz de La Palma” and short briefing.
Bus transfer to “Cubo de la Galga” (regular bus line 100, every hour) for a 4 hours walk in the dense laurel forests. The canarian laurel forest is a prehistoric combination of trees and bushes, dating back to the tertiary period, housing amongst others, giant ferns and century old laurels (bays). Here you find a large selection of indigenous plants and flowers of great botanical interest. Today’s hike is circular with light descends and ascends through the enormous canyons that form the “Cubo de la Galga”. Upon reaching the viewpoint of “Mirador de Somada Alta” you can enjoy a well earned rest and look out over the entire northeast coast of La Palma. At the end of your hike you can taste a typical “barraquito” (coffee withliquor) in Flora’s small local bar at “San Bartolos” Hamlet, before waiting next bus (line 100) who will bring you back to “Santa Cruz de La Palma”.
Today you will hike along the mythical “Ruta de Los Volcanes” (GR 131), starting at Refugio del Pilar and ending in the far southern side of the island, at the little village of “Fuencaliente”. After a 40 minutes taxi transfer you start your walk at “Refugio del Pilar”, some 1.450 mts above sea level.
The walk begins with an steadily ascend and eventually leave the pine forests behind. While walking through the trees you pass a series of viewpoints with magnificent views to the “Caldera” crater and the entire “Aridane” valley. Step by step you'll reach the recent volcanic area and will pass by the crater of the “Hoyo Negro” and “Duraznero”, both erupted in 1.949 (“San Juan” volcano). The “Deseadas” (1.950 mts high) are two older volcanoes and both craters represent the highest peak of the entire volcanic range. From this point begin your descend step by step through fields of soft volcanic ash. After passing by the “San Martín” volcano, one of the most beautiful volcano all over the route who erupted in 1.646, you will enter in a pine forests until you arrive to the end of your walk, at “Fuencaliente”, some 650 mts above the sea level. Return using the regular bus line (200 and 201 - every hour)
Today’s walk takes you inside the “Caldera” crater, National Park since 1954. After a 75 minutes transfer you reach the viewpoint “Los Brecitos”, some 1050 mts above the sea level. The path descends gently towards the center of the crater. You will pass by ancient tobacco plantations and some spectacular viewpoints. After 2 hours walk you arrive to the camping area, also known as “Playa de Taburiente” (beach), a nice place to make a short break. Here you need to cross the little river and follow de “Reventón” in a short but steep descent. Before reaching the “Angustias” gorge, you will pass the holy rock of “Roque Idafe”, a sacred symbol of the aborigines. And few minutes later you will arrive at the two rivers junction: “Limonero” and “Almendro Amargo”. From here you can do a brief visit to the "Cascada de Colores" just 10 minutes in the opposite direction.
You’ll still walk two hours along the “Angustias” gorge and crossing occasionally the little water flow until the end of this hike.
Our driver bring you today to the highest place on La Palma: the “Roque de Los Muchachos”, 2426 mts above the sea level. Walk along the GR131, on the “Caldera” rim from “Roque de Los Muchachos”until “Pico de La Cruz” (2351 mts above the sea level). In that walk you will enjoy the imposing cliffs, with 1000 mts drops into the cráter.
The “Caldera” rim forms a semicircle of 27 Km. There are different astrophysical observatories from various countries. Views to the entire island are absolutely spectacular as well as neighboring islands views. The trail progresses in a slight descent passing through iconic places like “Pared de Roberto”, an impressive basaltic dam and “Degollada de Franceses”, lookout to both side of the island. Once you get to “Pico de La Nieve” and after enjoying the magnificent views to the Eastern side, you must leave the GR131 and follow the PR LP 3 downwards for 30 minutes. You’ll arrive to a parking area where the driver is waiting for you.
Possible extension of your stay on La Palma or transfer on your own to the airport from Santa Cruz de La Palma.
