Today’s route begins in the most unique village in La Gomera: Agulo. With magnificent views towards the island of Tenerife and its Pico del Teide, this picturesque village holds the honour of having been selected as one of the 11 most beautiful villages in Spain in 2021.
The ascent up the Agulo cliff leads you to the Mirador de Abrante, a stunning suspended viewpoint with breathtaking views of Pico del Teide. The path crosses the most rural part of La Gomera, through small hamlets such as La Rosa. To the north, the constant silhouette of the island of La Palma stands out on the horizon.
After reaching the highest point at Cruz del Tierno, the trail begins a relentless descent to the foot of Roque Cano, a spectacular monolith and iconic landmark of Vallehermoso.

Day 5:
Las Hayas – Valle Gran Rey
After a 40-minute transfer to Las Hayas, a cluster of houses near the National Park famous for the stews at the inn of the legendary “Doña Efigenia”, the trail takes you to Arure and begins a spectacular descent through the palm grove of Valle Gran Rey.
In the upper part of the ravine, goat herds graze peacefully in their sheltered enclosures. And as you descend, small houses gradually appear, creating an idyllic scene that ends beside the sea, in La Calera.
Valle Gran Rey was a refuge for the Guanches in ancient times. Later it was the hippies who found their paradise in the valley. Today structured tourism has taken over the coastal areas, though a stroll through the narrow lanes of La Calera brings back that authentic feeling of a fishermen’s quarter. …And at Playa del Inglés you can enjoy a refreshing swim after your route through the south.

Its terraced hillsides and imposing basalt walls mark the entrance to the Barranco de Arure. Following the course of the stream we climb through the narrow ravine. The trail is somewhat winding and has us hopping from stone to stone until we reach the beautiful waterfall. With a 15-metre drop, its flow of water invites a refreshing swim before continuing on the way back.
The route returns along the same stream bed towards the Casa de la Seda. From there, we begin the descent along the path running parallel to the road towards Valle Gran Rey.

After reaching Lo del Gato through a landscape full of palm trees, the ascent begins towards the abandoned settlement of Benchijigua. The trail then enters the lush slopes of Roque Agando and begins a relentless climb.
Roque Agando is a phenomenal basalt rock monolith that rises majestically at the centre of the island. Our route ends at an altitude of over 1,200 metres, at the Mirador de Tajaqué.

La Gomera, history and trails
On his voyages to the New Continent, Christopher Columbus used to stop in La Gomera to restock and resupply before setting off on his Atlantic crossing. Who would have thought that 500 years later, walking La Gomera would be the object of desire of modern discoverers: hikers.
There are not many places in the world that, in such a small space, have such a rich and valuable natural ecosystem. The hiking trails from Gomera have recently been recognised as a Biosphere Reserve. It has a National Park of enormous botanical value and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
La Gomera, the last foothold for Columbus before crossing the unknown seas, is today an island appreciated by hikers from all over the world. An island where time seems to have stood still and which preserves extinct landscapes, vanished ways of life and forgotten legends. These coexist with charming settlements of multicoloured hamlets, whimsical manifestations of nature and a special light that varnishes the whole.
Walking La Gomera
This is an island of ancient volcanic origin. The passage of time has allowed erosion to act, gradually diluting its contours. From its central plateau, rising 1300 metres above the sea, a system of deep ravines spreads out radially, reaching every corner of the island.
These ravines connect the villages and hamlets by the sea via winding paths. The paths ascend towards the central plateau, descending on the opposite side. Along the way, they reveal the island’s enormous biodiversity, both botanical and fauna.
The hiking routes on walking La Gomera offer unparalleled diversity. The laurel forests, ancient botanical remains from the Tertiary period are plant relics from a distant past that have survived to the present day. The enormous palm groves in the southern valleys, besides their beauty, are useful for the island’s economy thanks to the palm honey. And the multiple terraces on the northern slopes are cultivated in the traditional way with all kinds of products from the land.
All these diverse landscapes can be enjoyed by hiking through the ravines on the countless trails La Gomera has to offer. In our one-week programme, we have selected the 5 most characteristic routes.

Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 6 Walks it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.
Trails
The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. You will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.
We recommend
Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
