Combine with other islands
Want to include other islands in your trip? You will save on ferry transfers or inter-island flights. We organise free of charge the connections between islands for you!
The Guanches were the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands until the arrival of the Spaniards. The Guanche population is of Berber origin, and it is assumed that they arrived on the islands around 1800 years ago. They developed differently on each island, so they have been given different names depending on the island: Benahoritas on La Palma; Bimbaches on El Hierro; Guanches on Tenerife and La Gomera…
Their way of life and customs were similar: they lived by herding, berry picking and local fishing. They lived in caves and did not know how to use metals. They did not sail, so there was no interaction between the tribes on the different islands.
In their journeys on foot with their herds, they used paths and trails previously marked by the animals. They used these trails to reach places suitable for grazing, crossed deep ravines and maintained relations with the various menceyatos of each island.
Today these trails are for the enjoyment of contemporary hikers and have technical designations such as GR 130 or GR 131. But we, in homage to those hardened hikers of the past, prefer to call them…

After crossing the square where the hotel is located, the path zigzags upwards towards San Juan del Reparo. Spectacular views open up towards the coast and the Orotava Valley.
Then there is a steady ascent from San Juan del Reparo to La Montañeta, along the bed of a ravine through which lava from the Chinyero Volcano flowed in 1909.
From La Montañeta, the path crosses a forest of enormous Canary Island pines that are almost 50 metres high, heading towards the east of Tenerife through the Corona Forestal Natural Park.
As you descend, you will gradually see cultivated plots of land and houses dotted among the mountain scenery. When we reach the Cueva del Viento, we find a small village next to the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

Day 3
2nd Stage: Cruz del Tronco - Los Realejos
After a 20-minute walk to the Ermita de La Cruz del Tronco hermitage, the second stage begins, entering directly into the Corona Forestal Natural Park. The path ascends until it reaches an altitude of 1050 metres and heads towards the El Lagar camping area.
We walk through a beautiful pine forest and soak up the tranquillity that surrounds us. After a good half of our hike, we will walk through the agricultural part with its various terraces where wine, potatoes and all kinds of vegetables are grown. The view of the blue ocean accompanies us on our way.
Once we reach the edge of the cliff and the wide view over the Orotava Valley opens up, we walk downhill to El Lance. From there we reach Tigaiga and shortly afterwards our hotel in Los Realejos.

Day 4
3rd Stage: Los Realejos - El Portillo
Our 3rd stage will be a challenging tour on which we will be rewarded with magnificent views. We start at the hotel in Realejos with an uphill trail. The Mirador de La Corona offers a first magnificent view over the entire Orotava Valley.
Now the continuous ascent begins through different levels of vegetation. Tree heather and gail tree, cistus and some laurel trees as well as the pine forest with its unmistakable scent provide us with shade from time to time on our hike.
We push through the clouds and reach the national park, the Cañadas. The Pico del Teide towers majestically before us. What an indescribable sight after the demanding ascent. From the Mirador El Fregel, we continue through the bizarre volcanic landscape until we reach El Portillo. There we have really earned a refreshment in the nearby bar. A taxi transfer takes us back to the hotel.

4th Stage: El Portillo - Parador de Las Cañadas
After a brief transfer to El Portillo, the Las Siete Cañadas path begins, heading towards the Montaña de Guajara.
The Seven Cañadas del Teide offer a unique landscape of endemic flora, covering the entire valley that forms Las Cañadas at its base. Peculiar formations of volcanic origin appear along the route, such as La Papelera and El Palomar, as well as ancient settlements of Guanche origin.
The last section of the GR 131 in this second stage is the Las Siete Cañadas track, which runs along the southern part, with the imposing view of the Montaña de Guajara (2718 meters ) and the Pico del Teide (3715 meters), until reaching the Parador Nacional.
Alternatively, on this day you can choose other routes of different levels, depending on your needs:

Day 6
5th Stage: Las Cañadas - Vilaflor
After a comforting night gazing at the stars in the privileged sky vault of Las Cañadas, today's route begins with a small ascent to cross the Degollada de Guajara. From its height, we will enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the entire southern slope of Tenerife, as well as the entire Las Cañadas valley with its Pico Viejo, Pico del Teide and Pico del Teide.
From Degollada de Guajara, the road to Vilaflor is marked by a long descent through dense Canarian pine forests. It is an obligatory stop to visit the Los Escurriales viewpoint where we are offered a spectacular view of the Landscape of the Moon, a peculiar volcanic setting with an extraterrestrial aspect.
The path crosses the ruins of the Casa de Marrubial, an old abandoned country house, and crosses the Barranco de Las Mesas on its descent to the south.
Vilaflor, located 1400 meters above the sea, holds the title of being the town with the highest altitude in the Canary Islands. A comforting accommodation with Spa awaits us there to recover the energy that we will still need to tackle the last stage of the GR 131

Day 7
6th Stage: Vilaflor - Villa de Arona
In front of the Church of San Pedro de Vilaflor, the GR 131 resumes its direction towards the sea through Calle Los Molinos. The Hermitage of San Roque offers splendid views to the walker through a path that goes uphill while entering the Parque Natural de La Corona Forestal.
After two kilometres, a long descent begins that crosses the Ifonche Protected Landscape and alternates between pine forest and farming terraces. After crossing the Barranco de Las Goteras by the Guayero bridge, we enter an area surrounded by flowers.
The Ifonche area was a producer of cereals and even today there are many cobbled threshing floors that follow one another along the path. Right before reaching Arona, the route enters the Special Natural Reserve of Barranco del Infierno, from where we can see the islands of La Gomera and La Palma, as well as Adeje and Los Cristianos.
The Roque del Conde, rising up to 1001 meters to the right of our path, already indicates the end of this last stage until we reach the Villa de Arona, about 2 km away.

Additional overnights
It is also possible to book some additional days, before or after the hiking week, or an additional week to relax.
Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 6 stages it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.
Trails
The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. In addition to the detailed map of Tenerife, you will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.
We recommend
Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
You can book at any date!
TENERIFE has two airports: Los Rodeos airport in the north (TFN), close to the capital, is ideal for those staying in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Laguna or Puerto de La Cruz or for those intending to connect with a local flight to other islands.
However, international flights mainly arrive at Reina Sofía Airport, located to the south (TFS). This airport is close to the port of Los Cristianos and the tourist centres in the south. It is the most convenient airport if you want to travel to the islands of La Gomera or El Hierro.
