The Water tour & Garoé Tree
The island of El Hierro reflects its history through water. Its past, present and future. This is a journey through the nature of the island that allows us to discover the meaning and importance of water in the island, both in remote times and in the present and immediate future.
A circular walk that starts in Valverde crossing the mythical surroundings of the Garoé and its pools, where the sacred tree of the aborigines is supposed to have stood, said to have wept water, located in a legendary forest in the middle of the route to Valverde.

Ermita de la Caridad ▸Mirador de La Peña
From the spectacular viewpoint of Jinama, near the Ermita de la Caridad, the path crosses disused fields along the Camino de La Virgen towards San Andrés.
From San Andrés, the path heads towards the El Golfo cliff on a gentle descent through green meadows.
Shortly before reaching the spectacular Mirador de La Peña, designed by the artist Cesar Manrique, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the Golfo from the top of the cliff. Our driver will pick you up at the Mirador to take you to your next accommodation.

Day 4
Las Carboneras walk
A deep dive into the lush laurel forests of El Hierro. Starting from Hoya del Pino, the path ascends towards the Pico del Malpaso going through an extensive and dense Monteverde until reaching the summit.
From the top of the Malpaso (1.502 metres above the sea) in clear days you can enjoy spectacular views towards the island of La Palma and the Pico del Teide, in Tenerife.
The path follows the route of the summit starting a slow descent that takes us to the Ermita de San Salvador. Here begins a zigzagging path that descends steeply until arriving to Frontera, the most representative locality of El Golfo.

Day 5
La Ermita way & Mirador de Bascos
The west side of El Hierro offers a recent volcanic landscape with a mysterious appearance. Our trail starts today next to a nearby eruption crater and ascends through its lava flows to reach the forest of haunted junipers. The furious wind has sculpted the shapes of these peculiar trees and moulded a landscape of extraordinary beauty.
After reaching the Mirador de Bascos, where there is an imposing view over El Golfo from the south flank of the island, the path continues now towards the Ermita de la Virgen de Los Reyes, patron saint of the island and reason for pilgrimages that take place every four years.
Now it is time to descend by a zigzagging path that goes down the impressive cliff to Sabinosa, a quiet and beautiful little village located on the cliff's flank.

El Pinar - La Llanía - Las Casas
From the sunny pine forests in the south of the island, the municipality of El Pinar, at an altitude of 800 metres above sea level, is the starting point for today's route. The splendid Canarian pines of majestic bearing populate this part of the island and surround the path that goes up to the summit through the Hoya del Morcillo.
After reaching La Llanía the path goes along the well-known "Camino de La Virgen", a pilgrimage route in the festivities of La Bajada de La Virgen that is repeated every 4 years. The path now descends towards Las Casas and returns to El Pinar on the opposite side.

Los Miradores walk to Las Playas
Today's route takes us to Las Playas, passing two of the island's most emblematic viewpoints: Mirador de Las Playas and Mirador de Isora. After leaving El Pinar the path goes along the impressive cliff until we reach the first viewpoint: Mirador de las Playas, with a vertical drop of 600 metres.
But along the route we will continue enjoying the dramatic views over Las Playas until we reach the next viewpoint: Mirador de Isora. From there, a zigzagging path goes down the cliff until it reaches the sea. From there the path continues along a sea dotted with beautiful cliffs until we reach our next accommodation: El Parador.

TOUR LOCATION
El Hierro HIGHLIGHTS will discover you the most peculiar enclaves of this small island on foot, individually but without having to drive from one place to another. A taxi will pick you up in the morning to take you to the starting point of the day's route. At the end of the day, the driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel.
This is a small family hotel located in the capital of the island, Valverde. It has a simple but comfortable appearance and is run by a friendly staff, who take great care of their guests, going out of their way to attend to their every need. Valverde, with a population of barely 5,000 inhabitants, is a quiet urban centre situated 600 metres above the sea on the eastern side of the island.
With only 17 well-appointed rooms, the Boomerang Hotel offers basic breakfast services in a cafeteria attached to the hotel.
All rooms have a private bathroom and television.
The setting is ideal for tackling the first route and enjoying a quiet urban atmosphere in the heart of El Hierro.
HOTEL GEKO
In the heart of El Golfo, on the north side of El Hierro, we find the quiet village of Los Llanillos, where the small Hotel Geko is located. It is a tiny but charming accommodation.
Its rooms, with wooden floors and ceilings in the purest traditional style, offer warmth and comfort in a family atmosphere. The proximity of the sea is omnipresent from every corner of the establishment.
The cave that was once a wine cellar has now been converted into a pleasant dining room for the hotel's guests. However, the usual setting for breakfast is the outdoor terrace.
HOTEL LUA BOUTIQUE
Located in the sunny municipality of El Pinar, this charming little boutique hotel is housed in a small building of modern construction.
With minimalist details and Bauhaus style, the Hotel Lua Boutique offers a pleasant environment and is strategically located for the last two routes of El Hierro HIGHLIGHTS.
A large roof terrace with uninterrupted views of the ocean serves as a place for breakfast, a place to relax and enjoy the sun, or at night to watch the stars twinkle in the dark and marvellous Herreño sky.
The rooms are decorated in a flirtatious and well-equipped style, with a mixture of styles that provide warmth and comfort. El Pinar, located 800 metres above the sea and just a few steps from La Restinga, is the ideal place to explore the southern part of the island.
PARADOR DE EL HIERRO
This unique accommodation is located in a modern building, facing an endless ocean. The Parador de El Hierro is a sober hotel that incorporates elements typical of the Herreño style, including wooden floors and ceilings.
The marvellous setting of Las Playas is located under spectacular cliffs on the eastern side of El Hierro. An ideal place to relax after a week of activity, walking around the island.
All the rooms offer an excellent view of the sea, with modern equipment and attention to detail, not without elegance and comfort. An extraordinary setting that invites you to extend your stay after the last route of this programme.

It is also possible to book some additional days, before or after the hiking week, or an additional week to relax.
Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 6 walks it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.

We recommend
Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.

Tenerife North Airport (TFN), is the convenient airport to connect with your local flight to the island of El Hierro (VDE). Although there are also connections to El Hierro from Gran Canaria (LPA) with BINTERor CANARYFLY. The jump between islands takes about 40-50 minutes.
but if your flight lands at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), you may prefer to combine it with a nice fast-ferry sea crossing (2,5 hours) from Los Cristianos harbour. Two different companies, FRED OLSENand NAVIERA ARMAS, provide regular connections between Tenerife and El Hierro.
