ABOUT THE CAMI DE CAVALLS SOUTH COAST
The origin of the Cami de Cavalls is linked to defensive and surveillance purposes. Its original layout is thought to have been established in the Middle Ages to allow troops and cavalry to move quickly around the island. This system made continuous surveillance of the coast possible, in order to prevent and respond to pirate attacks and other threats from the sea.
Through the eighteenth century Menorca changed hands several times between the British, the French and the Spanish. The British in particular improved and used the path to strengthen their coastal defences and ease communication between their various fortifications. Watchtowers and forts were built along it, many of which can still be seen today.
After the definitive Spanish reconquest in 1802, the Cami de Cavalls continued to be used for military and defensive purposes. The towers and fortifications went on playing an important role in protecting the island until the threat of invasion receded.
As time passed and military technology advanced, the path lost its strategic value and was gradually abandoned. Many sections fell out of use and were overgrown by vegetation.
Today the Cami de Cavalls is also valued for its ecological importance. The trail runs through protected natural areas and offers walkers spectacular views of the local flora and fauna. It is a green corridor linking the different ecosystems and landscapes of Menorca.
The Cami de Cavalls is more than a path: it is living testimony to the history and resilience of Menorca, a cultural and natural jewel that invites you to explore the island’s past and present.
Why the south coast: the coves on every postcard
Menorca has two coastlines and they have nothing in common. The north is dark rock, tramontana wind and reddish sand; the south, the one this programme walks, is where the white-sand coves and turquoise water of every Menorca photograph actually are.
Six stages and ninety kilometres string almost all of them together: Cala en Porter with its necropolis cut into the cliff, the long beach at Son Bou with a fifth-century early Christian basilica sitting right on the sand, and then the stretch from Cala Galdana to Son Xoriguer, where Macarella, Macarelleta, Turqueta, Mitjana, Trebalúger, Escorxada and Fustam follow one after another. Several have no road access at all — you reach them on foot or by boat, which is why they still look the way they do.
The profile helps. With 728 metres of ascent spread across six days, no single stage is hard through accumulation, and the ground alternates between scrub, sand and farm track. This is a walk you can interrupt for a swim almost every hour, which is not always true on the north coast.
The final stage rounds the harbour into Ciutadella and finishes in the old town, so the trip ends in one of the island’s two historic cities.

Medieval origin of the Cami deCavalls:
The origin of the Camí deCavalls dates back to the 14th century, during the occupation of the Kingdom of Aragon. It was established as a means of communication and defence to protect the island from invaders and pirates.
The name Camí deCavalls translates as “Horse Path”, indicating its original use by mounted soldiers patrolling the coast.
Deterioration and Disuse
Over the centuries, especially during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Cami de Cavalls fell into disuse. The modernisation of infrastructures and the development of new roads made the path less necessary for transport and defence purposes. Much of the path deteriorated, and some sections were even privatised or blocked by new constructions.
Recovery Process – Initiatives of the 1990s
The recovery of the Cami deCavalls began in earnest in the 1990s, driven by growing environmental awareness and interest in sustainable tourism.
Citizen and Political Mobilisation: Local organisations and citizens’ groups began to advocate for the restoration of the path. In 1996, the Consell Insular de Menorca, the island’s local government, took the initiative to recover and reopen the path.
Agreements and Expropriations: There was a long process of negotiation and, in some cases, expropriation of private land occupying parts of the road. This process was complicated and required a lot of time and effort to resolve legal disputes and obtain the consent of the landowners.
Restoration and Signage: Restoration work was carried out, including the cleaning and repair of the path, the construction of bridges and footbridges, and the installation of appropriate signage for hikers.
Inauguration and Current Use
The Cami deCavalls was officially reopened in 2010. Today, the trail is divided into 20 stages and stretches for about 185 kilometres around the island. It is used by hikers, cyclists and horse riders alike.

Our Camí de Cavalls Sur programme covers the entire southern coast of Menorca, from Maó to Ciutadella, in 6 stages over 8 days. The route covers a total of 90.2 km, with daily stages ranging from 13 to 17 km: Maó ▸ Biniancolla ▸ Cala en Porter ▸ Son Bou ▸ Cala Galdana ▸ Son Xoriguer ▸ Ciutadella. It is a self-guided, point-to-point trip: each day you finish the stage at a different accommodation, without ever retracing your steps.
What’s included in the package?
The programme includes 7 nights’ accommodation with breakfast in charming hotels and guesthouses on the south coast, all luggage transfers between accommodation, the necessary passenger transfers for each stage (except on arrival and departure days), maps, detailed descriptions and GPX tracks for offline GPS navigation, an informative video call on the day of arrival, and 24-hour support and assistance throughout the trip. It does not include flights, airport-to-hotel transfers, lunches and dinners, or the Balearic Islands tourist tax.
How difficult is the Camí de Cavalls Sur?
The route is rated level 3 out of 5 (▲▲▲△△). It is suitable if you are physically fit, used to walking, and able to tackle ascents and descents without any health issues. The southern stages are gentler than those in the north of the island, but they are still full days’ walk of 13 to 17 km, often in hot weather and with stretches without shade, so the programme is designed for regular walkers.
Is it a guided tour or am I going on my own?
This is an independent (self-guided) walking holiday: you walk at your own pace, with no group and no set timetable. We take care of all the logistics: we book your accommodation, transfer your luggage from hotel to hotel, and provide you with maps, descriptions of each stage and GPX tracks so you can navigate using your mobile phone. What’s more, on the day of your arrival, we’ll hold an informative video call to go over all the details, and we’ll be available 24 hours a day throughout your trip.
How does the luggage transfer service work?
Every morning, you leave your suitcase at the reception of your accommodation and we’ll take it to the next hotel, so you’ll only be carrying a light rucksack with the essentials for the day (water, food, sun cream and swimwear). We recommend bringing just one suitcase per person, weighing no more than 20 kg, for the whole trip.
What coves and places will I see on the southern route?
The south is home to Menorca’s most famous coves. Over the course of the six stages, you’ll pass through the port of Maó, the Cales Coves Necropolis, the early Christian basilica of Son Bou alongside its extensive sandy beach, and the unspoilt coves of Escorxada, Fustam, Trebalúger and Mitjana. The stage between Cala Galdana and Son Xoriguer is the jewel in the crown of the route: Macarella, Macarelleta, Turqueta, Es Talaier and the beaches of Son Saura, before finishing in Ciutadella via the Artrutx lighthouse.
When is the best time to walk the Camí de Cavalls South?
The programme can be booked for any date of the year, subject to availability at the accommodation. The best times to visit are spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild and the coves are less crowded. Please note that in Menorca, the peak tourist season runs from 1 May to 30 September: during these months, accommodation prices rise, the package price may be higher than the base price, and early-booking discounts do not apply.
What discounts are available?
We apply an early booking discount to reservations confirmed far enough in advance; the percentage and the dates it applies are set out under Prices, along with the per-person rate in a double or twin room, the single occupancy supplement and the solo traveller rate. Note that the Balearic Islands also charge a tourist tax, collected directly by each property on arrival, which is not included in our price.
How do I make a booking, and what is the cancellation policy?
To secure your booking, a deposit of €150 per person is required; the balance is payable 15 days before arrival. We will confirm your booking within 24 hours and, if there is no availability, we will refund the amount or suggest alternative dates. The cancellation policy is as follows: 100% refund (excluding the initial deposit) up to 14 days before arrival; 50% refund or a free date change between 13 and 7 days before arrival; 25% refund between 6 and 3 days before arrival; and no refund from 48 hours before arrival.
Can I change the programme or add extra days?
Yes, the programme is flexible: you can rearrange the stages to fit in days off to rest or spend at the beach in between, and you can also book extra nights before or after the week of hiking, or even an extra week of relaxation on the island. Just let us know what you’d like, and we’ll tailor the plan to your preferences.
How do I get to Menorca and to the start and finish points?
Menorca is served by direct flights from numerous Spanish cities with airlines such as Iberia and Vueling. If you can’t find a direct flight with suitable times or prices, a practical alternative is to fly to Mallorca and connect to Menorca via Air Nostrum (a subsidiary of Iberia), which operates multiple daily flights lasting just 45 minutes. Transfers from the airport to your first hotel in Maó and from Ciutadella to the airport on the day of departure are at your own expense (taxi or bus).
Is the route well signposted? Do I need a satnav?
The Camí de Cavalls is a long-distance hiking trail (GR-223) certified to European standards, with markers and consistent signposting along its entire route. Even so, as part of the programme, we provide you with descriptions of each stage and GPX tracks with GPS coordinates so you can follow the route on your mobile device without an internet connection, ensuring you can walk in complete safety even on sections with poor mobile coverage.
What should I put in my rucksack every day?
We recommend suitable hiking clothing and sturdy footwear, sun cream, a hat, sunglasses, a light windproof jacket and, during the winter months, warm clothing that you can put on and take off in layers. During the stages, it is essential to carry enough water and food, as there are sections without facilities. The use of walking poles is highly recommended. And don’t forget your swimwear: the coves in the south are perfect for a swim on almost every stage.
Where will I stay overnight during the trip?
You’ll stay in small, charming guesthouses and hotels situated in strategic locations at the end of each stage, with breakfast always included: Maó (Hostal Jume Urban Rooms), Biniancolla (Barceló Nura), Cala en Porter (Castell de Lô), Son Bou (HG Jardín de Menorca), Cala Galdana (Comitas Floramar), Son Xoriguer (Sagitario Princesa Playa) and Ciutadella (Sagitario Hostal Ciutadella), subject to availability and with similar accommodation offered as an alternative.
What is the difference between the Camí de Cavalls South and the other options offered by Natour?
The Camí de Cavalls South (6 stages, 8 days) covers the southern half of the island, home to picture-postcard coves with white sand and turquoise waters, and offers a gentler route. Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 6 stages from Camí de Cavalls it is necessary a good physical condition, a healthy condition and steady walk and. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.

Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
