Hiking Gran Canaria: the best hiking tours
Together with Tenerife, Gran Canaria is one of the two main islands of the Canary archipelago and is home to part of the autonomous institutions. The island had an incipient tourist development, mainly in its beach areas: Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas in the south and Playa de Las Canteras in the capital itself. However, the mountainous interior of Gran Canaria has remained unaffected by this development and preserves an extraordinary natural environment with an enormous diversity of landscapes.
A large number of hiking trails now make it possible to walk inland and discover, on foot, a nature that has remained relatively untouched, with impressive volcanic landscapes, deep gorges and beautiful mountains.
Here are some of the best hiking tours in Gran Canaria:
Roque Nublo: This is one of the most popular hiking tours on the island. It takes you up to the iconic Roque Nublo, a huge rock formation that towers over the landscape. The route gives you spectacular views of the island and you can enjoy an amazing sunset from the top.
Barranco de Guayadeque: This ravine is a breathtaking place with its lush vegetation and imposing cliffs. The hiking route takes you through the ravine, passing prehistoric caves and small settlements. You can also enjoy the local gastronomy in the restaurants located in the area (some of them are carved inside the caves).
Reserva Natural Especial de Azuaje: This hiking tour takes you through a laurel forest, a type of subtropical forest that used to cover a large part of the Canary Islands. Enjoy beautiful waterfalls, streams and a variety of flora and fauna.
Caldera de Bandama: This hiking tour takes you to the crater of the Bandama volcano. You can walk around the crater and enjoy the panoramic views of the island and the surrounding volcanic landscape.
Pico de las Nieves: This is the highest mountain in Gran Canaria and offers breathtaking panoramic views from the top. The hiking route takes you to the summit, passing through beautiful landscapes and picturesque villages.

Day 2
Caldera de Bandama
Driving just 10 minutes in your car from the hotel you will find the fascinating Caldera de Bandama and also the Canarian Garden. The Jardín Canario is located in the Barranco de Santa Brígida, next to a cliff between Mount Lentiscal. It is an area of rich vineyards and wineries. The circular route through the Caldera de Bandama begins at the edge of a large volcanic crater 1000 m wide, formed after the last volcanic eruption in Gran Canaria. The views are spectacular and the city of Las Palmas and even the neighboring island of Fuerteventura can be seen in the distance on clear days. The trail descends to the bottom of the Caldera and crosses old caves and abandoned houses, ascending again towards the starting point.

Day 3
Barranco Azuaje
In the smallest municipality of Gran Canaria, everything revolves around water. Today's hike takes place in Firgas, in the north of the island. We start in the village and hike down into the Barranco de Azuaje, where we cross river courses and immerse ourselves in lush, almost jungle-like vegetation with springs and waterfalls and huge laurel trees, bamboo, willows and ferns.

Day 4
Artenara ridge
After 45 minutes of driving, today you go to the Parador Cruz de Tejeda with your luggage, or to Hotel Agaldar (Gáldar), depending of availability. This will be your next accommodation for the next 4 nights. After check-in at the hotel, an impressive hike begins. After an initial ascent, you will reach the crest of the Caldera de Tejeda. The descent offers exceptional views over the deep ravines, picturesque mountain villages and iconic rock formations in the center of the island. And in the distance you can see the peak of Teide, on the neighboring island of Tenerife. During the route you will cross ancient troglodyte settlements recognized by UNESCO, in the Caves of Caballero and Cuevas de Los Candiles before arriving at Artenara. Located 1,270 meters above the sea, Artenara is the highest town on the island with around 400 cave houses. These caves were mostly carved in the 15th century. Once you have arrived in Artenara, you will return to the hotel with a short taxi transfer, to enjoy the excellent facilities, the spa and the panoramic pool overlooking the surrounding cliffs and ravines.

Day 5
Guayadeque gorge
Start your route today in the extinct crater of the Caldera de Los Marteles, 20 min. by car from Cruz de Tejeda. A continuous ascent through pine forests takes you to Cruz del Socorro, with extraordinary views of the Barranco de Guayadeque, undoubtedly one of the most emblematic ravines in Gran Canaria. A descent through the gorge continues, between areas of cacti and beautiful palm groves with a multitude of flowers and poppies at their base, a perfect place for a picnic. This entire valley is made up of stone walls and terraced fields. You will also find some cave houses that are still inhabited today. A typical landscape of the sunny south, with almond trees, piteras and prickly pears in abundance. And maybe you will also see the giant lizard of Gran Canaria. After this walk, you can go with the car to the lower valley and to the Montaña de Las Tierras or Cueva Bermeja, an idyllic place with small taverns inside artificial caves ideal to reward yourself with a cold beer or to enjoy a good meal. And on your way back to the hotel, feel free to stop by the Pico de Las Nieves (1,949 m), the highest point on the island, with spectacular views from its viewpoint.

Day 6
The Fortress of Ansite
Today your route takes you to Santa Lucía de Tirajana (50 min by car) with a descent through the beautiful Canarian palm grove until you reach the idyllic towns of El Ingenio and La Sorrueda. You will explore its streets full of character before continuing to the archaeological site of La Fortaleza, a 2,000-year-old fortified settlement carved out of the steep rock by the Aborigines. More recently, as early as the 15th century, it was the Guanches who used it in their futile attempt to resist the Spanish Empire conquest. From this place you will go through the original tunnel to a path that ascends through olive trees and return to Santa Lucia. To complete the day, don't miss out on visiting the beautiful white town of Tejeda, where its almonds and cookies are a must try.

Day 7
Roque Nublo
The Roque Nublo, a huge monolith in permanent balance on a rocky plateau 1800 m high, is what remains of an old volcanic dam formed in the Pleistocene. It is undoubtedly the icon of Gran Canaria and a must during your stay on the island. Start your route today in Llanos de La Pez (10 min by car from the hotel), ascending through pine forests towards the ridge of Riscos de Tirajana. Extraordinary views open to the south, showing you the deep ravines and their cliffs with vertical falls. When you arrive at La Foguera, you will enjoy a spectacular view of the Roque Nublo, the Caldera de Tejeda and the Roque Bentayga rising in its center. Later you continue your ascent to Roque, from where you will enjoy a 360º panorama over the entire island and even towards the other islands of the archipelago: Tenerife, La Gomera and even El Hierro.
Return in your car passing by the Los Hornos dam reservoir, the highest in Gran Canaria and also known as the La Cumbre reservoir. … And don't forget to enjoy your last night in Gran Canaria with an impressive sunset from the hotel terrace.

A large part of the estate on which the hotel is located is home to a plantation of bananas and avocados, as well as other tropical fruits. The hotel also has a large swimming pool within its landscaped grounds. Additional overnights

Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 6 Walks it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.
Trails
The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. In addition to the detailed map of Gran Canaria, you will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.
We recommend
Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
