Beyond its abundant natural spaces, the limits of La Gomera also tend towards infinity in terms of activities to practise, to unforgettable plans to carry out and treasure for a long time.

Viewpoints

One is to explore the network of viewpoints that stretches the length and breadth of the island, providing extraordinary panoramic views of its coasts, its elevations, its thick forests and, beyond, the Atlantic Ocean and even Palma, Tenerife and Teide on days when visibility is good.

The maritime space that separates Tenerife from La Gomera is ideal for observing different types of cetaceans swimming freely. They can be seen all year round, but the best time to see them is from March to June. Among them, the most common are the pilot whale, the pilot whale and the bottlenose dolphin.

Inland, to take just one example, Hermigua contains a few secrets. It is said to have the best climate in the world. The valley in which it is located is majestic in itself, with all that vegetation, that jungle and those banana trees stretching uncontrollably as far as the eye can see. But the little villages scattered throughout the valley are also beautiful. The Dominican convent of San Pedro Apóstol in the neighbourhood of the same name, the gofio mill museum, the ethnographic museum, the old Hermigua davit. They are certainly worth a visit.

Culture and Gastronomy

Talking about the culture and heritage of La Gomera inevitably involves talking about the silbo, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the repository of an atavistic form of communication that has transcended from gorge to gorge up to the present day. The inhabitants of La Gomera have recently undertaken important preservation work and continue to learn and disseminate it so that it is not lost.

But neither should we leave out other traditions inherited from the island’s ancient inhabitants, such as the so-called drum dance, in which the participants play the chácaras (a percussion instrument made of bone or wood, very similar to the castanets, although larger in size) while jumping and spinning around.

Nor should we forget the island’s delicious gastronomic offer, which includes products such as palm honey, made from the sap of the native palm tree and the star of numerous dishes, desserts and drinks. Goat meat, watercress stew and almogrote (mojo with a density similar to that of pâté and made from a base of cured cheese) are some of the other local delicacies.

And the wines, the wines with denomination of origin, obtained through a lot of effort and dedication due to the complicated terrain of the Gomeran terrain. That is why they have such a special flavour. As do, in short, all the products of La Gomera.

Natural spaces for La Gomera hiking holidays

A land of contrasts, like the whole of the Canary archipelago, it is on La Gomera that they reach proportions that verge on the fantastic. From its lofty peaks to its small beaches of volcanic ash.

Garajonay National Park

It is named after the Garajonay peak, which at 1,487 metres is the highest point on La Gomera. Apart from this, Garajonay is worth for a walk in La Gomera walking holidays. The laurel forest, which in the Tertiary period covered almost all of Europe, still reigns supreme in the park.

Valle Gran Rey

One of the most touristic areas, connected by ferry directly from Tenerife. One of the most touristy areas due to its unparalleled beaches and its numerous restaurants where you can enjoy typical Gomeran dishes on La Gomera walking holidays.

Los Órganos

It is no coincidence that this geological formation of volcanic origin is so called. The group of natural columns is reminiscent of the pipes of the musical instrument. Admiring them on a boat trip (they can only be seen in all their splendour from the sea) is truly impressive.

Alojera

In the east of La Gomera, in the municipality of Vallehermoso, 200 metres long and 40 metres wide of black sand welcome visitors. It is the beach of Alojera, a place like something out of a dream, between cliffs and reefs of unique beauty.

Lomo del Carretón

Speaking of cliffs, the Lomo del Carretón stands out for its tremendous beauty and its value not only for its landscape, but also for its geological and floral value. It is an experience for the senses and a significant source of geomorphological data.

Roque de Agando

Perhaps the most iconic natural monument on the island. A volcanic piton around 1250 metres high in the very heart of La Gomera, in the ravine of Benchijigua.

Majona Natural Park

Natural Park since 1987, Site of Community Importance (SCI) of Majona and Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) of the Majona coast, its prehistoric forests, the large number of footpaths that run through it and the attraction of its geographical features make it worthy of a prominent place in the ranking of places in La Gomera.

Nor are there many other territories that, in such a small space as La Gomera, have such a rich and valuable natural ecosystem, recognised as a Biosphere Reserve and declared a World Heritage Site and National Park. The last stop for Christopher Columbus before embarking on his journey to the other side of the globe.

Time has stopped in La Gomera. Preserving extinct landscapes, disappeared ways of life and forgotten legends outside the island. These coexist with charming settlements of multicoloured hamlets, whimsical manifestations of nature and a special light that varnishes the whole.
