DAY 2
Stage 1: Orzola – Haría
After a 30-minute transfer to Orzola, the crossing of Lanzarote begins from north to south. The trail ascends along the slope of the Risco de Famara until reaching the Mirador del Rio. This spectacular viewpoint, created by César Manrique, offers a unique view over the Island of La Graciosa.
From here, the trail runs along the edge of the Risco de Famara (at about 700 metres above sea level), skirting the ancient Corona volcano on its western flank. The path towards Haría is dotted with small vegetable gardens that supply the local population.
After passing through Máguez, the Camino del Guanche begins a gentle descent towards the Valley of a Thousand Palm Trees. Haría sits in the heart of this valley and enjoys ample humidity and a pleasant microclimate. Here we will find our next accommodation: the Casa de Los Naranjos.

DAY 3
Stage 2: Haría – Villa de Teguise
After climbing back up through the Haría valley, we reach the Risco de Famara once again, with fresh perspectives over its sweeping beach. The GR 131 winds between the Risco and Cueva de Las Cabras viewpoints until reaching the Ermita de Las Nieves.
A long descent now begins heading south until reaching the Ermita de San José. Shortly after, we enter the Villa de Teguise. Founded in the 15th century, the Villa de Teguise boasts a remarkable architectural heritage. Among its main buildings are the Church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, the Convent of Santo Domingo, the Palacio de Spinola, the Casa Museo del Timple, and the Casa-Museo del Emigrante Canario.

+ B&B La Mimosa (Villa de Teguise)
DAY 4
Stage 3: Villa de Teguise – Coníl
Today’s stage crosses the central plateau of Lanzarote, from the Villa de Teguise to Coníl. Along the way, farmland and notable villages appear in turn, including San Bartolomé, where a stop at Pastelería Lolita is a must.
Leaving San Bartolomé, we circle the ancient volcanic cone of Montaña Guatisea, which separates it from the village of Montaña Blanca. A little further on, after rounding Montaña Blanca — which lends the village its name — the Iglesia de la Candelaria comes into view, marking the start of the built-up area that forms the centre of Coníl.

+ Hotel Lancelot (Arrecife)
DAY 5
Stage 4: Coníl – Yaíza
Today’s stage runs parallel to the Timanfaya National Park, heading south. This is a densely settled area with a myriad of houses scattered across the surroundings. The Camino del Guanche cuts in a straight line through Macher, at times running alongside the main road.
After leaving Montaña de Tinasoria behind, the GR 131 begins to climb towards Las Casitas, skirting the Caldera Riscada on its southern flank. We now enter a rugged, arid landscape where the Los Ajaches mountain range begins — the island’s oldest geological formation and its sunniest stretch.
Finally we reach the beautiful village of Yaíza, whose name honours a legendary Guanche princess who bore the same name.
12 km | +212 m / -292 m
+ Hotelito La Era (Yaíza)
DAY 6
Stage 5: Yaíza – Playa Blanca
The final stage on Lanzarote will take you to Playa Blanca, a premier tourist resort where the mark of economic development is plain to see. The trail climbs gently along the northern flank of the Cordillera de Los Ajaches until reaching the village of Las Breñas.
Ancient lava fields give way one after another until reaching Los Hervideros, a viewpoint from which the neighbouring islands of Lobos and Fuerteventura can be seen. A little further on, the first tourist developments appear, their identical houses stretching on in an endless expanse. Playa Blanca lies at our feet, and its picturesque white sandy beach invites a refreshing dip before our driver takes us back to Yaíza.

+ Hotelito La Era (Yaíza)
DAY 7

Rest day or beach day
It is well worth setting aside a day off from walking to visit the Timanfaya National Park, the nearby visitor centres, or the César Manrique Foundation in Tahiche. The wine-growing area of La Geria is also worthy of a visit.
A special mention goes to El Golfo and the Janubio Salt Flats, as well as the Hervideros del Agua, all very close to Yaíza.
That said, a quiet day of sun and beach suits everyone perfectly. The best option for that is a trip to the Papagayo Beaches in Playa Blanca — a bathing paradise that has managed to remain untouched by the pressures of tourist development.

ABOUT THE GUANCHES
The Guanches were the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands until the arrival of the Spanish. In Lanzarote, the Guanches were known as the “Mahos” and it is believed that their population was concentrated in the north and west of the island. The Mahos lived in caves and stone constructions, and were dedicated to agriculture and fishing. They developed differently on each island, so they have been given different names depending on the island: Benahoritas on La Palma; Bimbaches on El Hierro; Guanches on Tenerife and La Gomera…
The Guanche population is of Berber origin and it is assumed that they arrived on the islands some 1800 years ago. Today, some vestiges of the Guanche culture can be seen in Lanzarote, such as the rock engravings found in some caves and rocks, as well as in some aspects of popular culture and local craftsmanship.
Although the Guanche culture disappeared over time, its legacy can still be seen today in the music, gastronomy and traditions of the Canary Islands.
The trails once used by the Guanches are now enjoyed by contemporary hikers and have technical names such as GR 130 or Lanzarote trail GR 131. However, in homage to those hardened hikers of the past, we prefer to call them…
Camino del Guanche
Lanzarote trail GR 131
The island of Lanzarote is one of the seven main islands of the Canary archipelago. It is a volcanic island with a very unique landscape, huge black lava plains, craters and volcanic lava flows.
In addition to the spectacular Lanzarote trail GR 131 , the island has numerous tourist attractions, including the stunning white sandy beaches in the south with crystal clear waters: Playas de Papagayo.
It also has genuine architecture, with buildings designed by the local artist and architect, César Manrique, which combine traditional architecture with modern style.
Lanzarote is, in short, an island of unique natural beauty, rich culture and distinctive architecture, making it an ideal place for a relaxing holiday and an unforgettable tourist experience, walking the Lanzarote trail GR 131 .
Characteristic corners and enclaves of Lanzarote
Some of the places you should not miss if you visit the island are the following:
National Park Timanfaya: is a unique natural park with a lunar landscape of volcanic origin. Here you can see the volcano craters and lava flows. You can also take a camel ride through the park.
Cueva de los Verdes: is a volcanic cave more than 6 km long with an impressive system of caves and underground galleries. Here you can enjoy a sound and light show that will take you through the geological history of the island.
Jameos del Agua: is a resort built in a volcanic cave with an impressive indoor lake, a botanical garden and a natural swimming pool. It is also home to a unique species of albino crab, found only on Lanzarote.
Mirador del Río: is a viewpoint built by César Manrique on the top of a cliff in the north of the island. From here you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby islands.
Fundación César Manrique: is a museum dedicated to the local artist and architect, César Manrique, which has a collection of art and a sample of his architectural work. You can also visit his house, which was built in a volcanic cave.
Playas de Papagayo: Lanzarote has many stunning beaches, but undoubtedly the most popular of them all is Playa de Papagayo, along with Playa Blanca, Famara and Caleta de Famara. All of them have crystal clear waters and black and white sand.
La Geria: is a unique wine-growing region where the vineyards are cultivated in pits dug out of the volcanic ash. Here you can enjoy a wine tasting and buy some of the local wines.

…Frequently Asked Questions
What is the total distance and how many stages is it recommended to divide it into?
The GR 131 trail on Lanzarote is approximately 75 kilometres long.
▸Leisurely pace: It is usually divided into 5 stages (about 15 km per day), allowing you to enjoy the villages and local cuisine.
▸Sporting pace: Many experienced hikers complete it in 3 or 4 stages.
▸Standard route: It crosses the island from end to end, generally from Órzola (north) to Playa Blanca (south).
Is it better to do it from north to south or south to north?
The general recommendation is to do it from north to south (Órzola -> Playa Blanca).
▸Main reason: The trade winds usually blow from the northeast. Walking south, you will have the wind at your back (or behind you) most of the time, which is very welcome on the sections exposed to the sun.
What type of footwear is most suitable?
The volcanic terrain is very abrasive (the ‘malpaís’ destroys soft soles).
▸We recommend trekking shoes or trail running shoes with hard soles and good cushioning.
▸Avoid wearing new shoes on this route; blisters are common due to the heat and friction of the volcanic sand.
Is there drinking water or fountains along the way?
No. This is a critical point. You will not find natural springs or streams along the route. You must be self-sufficient with water between stages. Make sure you set off each morning with at least 2 to 3 litres of water, especially if it is hot, and refill at the supermarkets in the villages where the stage ends.
When is the best time to hike the GR131 trail ?
The best time to visit is from October to April.
▸Winter: Ideal temperatures for walking (20-22°C), although it can be windy.
▸Summer: Not recommended. The heat can be stifling, there is no shade on 90% of the route and the sun’s rays are very strong.
▸Beware of the Calima: If calima (dust from the Sahara) and high temperatures are forecast, it is dangerous to walk the route.
Is the route well signposted?
Yes, the signage is generally good. As it is a Long Distance Trail (GR), it follows the international white and red paint markings. You will also find wooden posts indicating crossroads. However, in areas of ‘bad country’ (lava fields) it is easy to get lost, so it is highly recommended to download the GPS track onto your mobile phone or watch.
Do I need any special permits?
You do not need a permit to walk along the GR 131 trail. However, when crossing protected areas (such as the Volcanoes Natural Park), it is mandatory to stay on the marked trail. Stepping off the path can damage fragile lichens or volcanic structures that take centuries to regenerate.
What is the level of technical and physical difficulty?
Technically, it is moderate-low, as there are no climbs or very exposed passages. However, it can be physically demanding due to two factors:
▸The terrain: Walking on ‘malpaís’ (volcanic rock) or picón (volcanic ash) is more tiring than walking on solid ground.
▸The heat: The lack of shade is the biggest challenge.
What ‘extra’ equipment is essential?
Beyond the basics, the following items are essential in Lanzarote:
▸Total sun protection: Cap/hat, sunglasses and factor 50 sun cream (the sun is strong even when it is cloudy).
▸Windbreaker: The trade winds can be constant and cold in high areas such as Risco de Famara.
▸Low gaiters: Optional, but very useful for preventing volcanic sand (picón) from getting into your trainers.

B&B LA MIMOSA
...And when we arrive in the village of Teguise we find a unique accommodation: the B&B La Mimosa. This is a Bed & Breakfast type accommodation set in the setting of a typical Lanzarote house, with a multitude of details and a minimalist appearance that will captivate the spirit of its guests.

The rooms are located in different spaces of this house in a harmonious but at the same time informal way, achieving a spectacular result. The Villa de Teguise was the first capital of Lanzarote and has a great historical heritage that is reflected mainly in its old mansions and palaces.

The architecture of the B&B La Mimosa keeps alive the character of a time when Lanzarote was the spearhead for the colonisation of the Canary Islands. It has small interior patios with abundant floral vegetation that invite meditation and rest after a day of great activity.

HOTELITO LA ERA

Yaíza is a small and pretty village with a rural appearance and very peaceful surroundings. An ideal place to rest after the day's activities and find peace and quiet.

Additional overnights
It is also possible to book some additional days, before or after the hiking week, or an additional week to relax.
Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 5 stages it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.
Trails
The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. You will get from us precise indications of each route and hotline assistance on your walks.
We recommend
Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
You can book at any date!
