Difficulty
This programme is for you if you usually do sports and have a good physical background; if you can walk steep slopes up and down and don’t have health problems; if you love nature, are environmentally friendly and are a regular hiker.
In the middle of the vast ocean, emerging like a hidden treasure, lies the island of El Hierro. It is a place where nature unfolds in all its splendour, weaving a mantle of beauty and mystery that captivates the senses and fires the imagination.
Its rugged coastline rises majestically, defying the raging sea that surrounds it. Imposing cliffs rise up to the sky, silent witnesses to the eternal struggle between man and nature. On its dark sandy beaches, the murmur of the ocean merges with the wind, creating a symphony of sounds that caress the soul.
In the island’s interior, a green tapestry stretches out in all directions. Laurisilva forests, ancient and wise, harbour a myriad of secrets in their thicket. Its trees whisper millenary stories, and every step is an encounter with life in its purest state. El Hierro is a symphony of colours: the vibrant green of the vegetation, the deep blue of the ocean and the greyish of the volcanic rocks that bear witness to its origin.
But beyond its breathtaking scenery, El Hierro is a haven of peace.
The calm rhythm of its villages and the hospitality of its people envelop you in a warm embrace. In every corner, you can breathe the authenticity and tradition rooted in its history. Its cobbled streets invite you to enjoy the time, to savour every moment and to discover the essence of the island.
El Hierro is a place where time seems to stand still. It is a sanctuary for those seeking a refuge from the hustle and bustle and stress of the modern world. Here, nature and man coexist in perfect harmony, reminding us that we are just a small part of a much larger whole.
In short, the island of El Hierro is a poem written by the wind, carved by the waves and painted by the sun. It is a place where magic becomes tangible and where the adventurous spirit finds its home. Immerse yourself in its landscapes, listen to its melody and let yourself be captivated by its indomitable charm.

Day 2
El Mocalan - Pozo de las Calcosas
The hamlet of El Mocanal, located in the fertile north of the island and surrounded by pastures and fields, is the starting point of this first route. Located at an altitude of about 450 metres, the path descends steeply towards the north coast, where we will find the natural pools of Pozo de las Calcosas
This is the evergreen area of El Hierro. A place of frequent mists predominantly agricultural and livestock. The road shows different vegetation levels, besides beautiful views towards the coast
When we get to the sea, we discover a very ancient village next to the natural pools. Its houses, built with dry stone walls and thatched roofs, are inhabited only in summer time or during the weekends. They serve as a refuge for occasional fishermen and for the enjoyment of local's free time. To get to the Pozo de Las Calsosas you will have to walk for about ten minutes along a narrow path that goes down the cliff.
The ascent and return to El Mocanal will be done following the path to Montaña Bermeja, from where we will be able to observe the characteristic Roques de Salmor, refuge of the giant lizards of El Hierro.

Day 3
Jinama viewpoint - La Albarrada and El Garoé
From the hotel, this circular route takes you up the trail PR EH 2.3 towards the Mirador de Jinama, through a lush forest of fayas and heather. The path converges with the GR131, a path that is also known as the "Camino de la Virgen" that pilgrims walk every 4 years.
The ascent takes us to the Mirador de Fireba, located 1,350 meters above the sea and part of an old volcanic crater. From there the view is great, enjoying an immense perspective towards the neighboring islands of Tenerife and La Palma.
After the well-deserved rest due to the exhausting ascent, a constant descent continues through the PR EH 2 trail, crossing the Hoya de Carboneros on its way back to Valverde. It is a circular route along a very panoramic path that evokes the movement of the ancient locals when they moved their cattle in search of the best pastures on the island.

Day 4
Sabinosa - Virgin of Los Reyes Hermitage
Sabinosa is the westernmost village of El Golfo. It is located on a steep slope 300 metres above the sea. A path starts from there to wind its way up the cliff to the edge, with spectacular views of the semicircle that forms El Golfo.
The route continues towards the Ermita de la Virgen de Los Reyes, patron saint of the island of El Hierro. After the obligatory visit to the Virgin, the path skirts the Montaña de las Cuevas where we find the characteristic savines of impossible shapes dotting the path
After a gentle descent, we reach the Mirador de Bascos, 600 metres above the sea, with superb views over El Golfo, La Gomera and La Palma. We briefly resume the ascent until we reach the cliff and continue along the winding path in a steep descent back to Sabinosa

Day 5
San Salvador Hermitage - El Pinar - Hoya del Morcillo
Today's route starts on the southern slope of the summit, near the Ermita de San Salvador, 1350 metres above the sea. From there, the path PR EH 3.1 also known as "Camino de la Fuente" descends towards El Pinar
A beautiful forest of big centenary pines is making its way in our descent until we reach the Hoya del Morcillo. This is a recreational and camping area located between volcanic cones, very close to the village of El Pinar.
From this point you start the ascent back to the summit passing by the Cueva del Mocán. Shortly before reaching the Cruz de Los Reyes it is surprising to find some dense forests with huge laurels, fayas and heathers, which were used in the past to produce charcoal.
Now the path is part of the "Camino de La Virgen" (GR 131) developing along the edge of the herreña summit and enjoying exceptional views to both sides of the island. We will soon reach Pico Tenerife before returning to the place where we parked the vehicle.

Day 6
Lizard - Long Point - La Maceta
The Lagartario and the Ecomuseum of Guinea are a must to understand the native fauna and the lifestyle of the first settlers on the island. The Lagartario is a centre for the preservation and recovery of the giant lizard of El Hierro, in serious danger of extinction in the past and now fully recovered in the Roques de Salmor. The Ecomuseum of Guinea reflects the way of life of the primitive Spanish settlers after the occupation of the island, in their hard rural chores
The way to Las Puntas is comfortable and it develops at the coast level after the visit of the Lagartario. It is a gentle descent between inhabited areas and mango and banana farms. Las Puntas is home to the smallest hotel in the world, according to Guinness World Records. A primitive jetty next to the hotel facilitates bathing for the more daring. The bar-restaurant offers a fantastic chill out atmosphere with spectacular views of the bay.
The path continues along the coast from Las Puntas to the natural pools of La Maceta. With a genuinely popular atmosphere, these natural pools offer unbeatable options for a refreshing final swim.
At the agreed time, a taxi will take you back to the Lagartario to pick up your vehicle.

Day 7
The south and Last Volcanoes Route
Today you must drive to the southern and sunny town of El Pinar, located 800 meters above the sea. And from there, your route will take you through the impressive volcanic landscape of the south to the sea. It is a route in permanent descent crossing a spectacular landscape of recent volcanoes.
After the obligatory coffee at the bar in the square, Calle La Paz heads downhill, converging with Calle La Hoya. And walking through these streets you will penetrate the magnificent volcanic environment around El Pinar, starting a permanent downhill that will end at El Tacorón Beach.
Next to this small paradisiacal-looking beach is the Devil's Cave, which is well worth a visit. After a refreshing swim, the taxi will take you back to El Pinar.

TOUR LOCATION
Our ESSENTIAL programme is the perfect way to take a tour of the island's most iconic hiking landmarks. Over the course of a whole week you will discover what El Hierro has to offer its visitors in terms of hiking. We have carefully chosen the six most characteristic routes, of medium complexity and with an approximate duration of 3-4 hours on each route, through very diverse enclaves of special beauty. Book your place now and enjoy an unforgettable hiking experience on the most remote island of the Canary Islands: El Hierro, the island of the Zero Meridian.
This is a small family hotel located in the capital of the island, Valverde. It has a simple but comfortable appearance and is run by a friendly staff, who take great care of their guests, going out of their way to attend to their every need. Valverde, with a population of barely 5,000 inhabitants, is a quiet urban centre situated 600 metres above the sea on the eastern side of the island.
With only 17 well-appointed rooms, the Boomerang Hotel offers basic breakfast services in a cafeteria attached to the hotel.
All rooms have a private bathroom and television.
The setting is ideal for the first walks and to enjoy a peaceful urban atmosphere in the heart of El Hierro.
BALNEARIO POZO DE LA SALUD
On the north coast, located in the municipality of Sabinosa, next to the mythical Pozo de La Salud and just a few metres from the Atlantic Ocean, we find the Hotel Balneario Pozo de La Salud. It is a 22-room accommodation with excellent facilities where you can enjoy a pleasant climate by the sea.
All the rooms offer an excellent view of the sea, with modern equipment and attention to detail. An extraordinary setting that invites you to extend your stay after the last walk.
Additional overnights
It is also possible to book some additional days, before or after the hiking week, or an additional week to relax.
Difficulty
To successfully achieve the 6 walks it is necessary a good physical condition, steady walk and lack of vertigo. According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution. Using hiking poles is highly recommended.
Trails
The Canary Islands has a well signposted network of trails. All sections where from our tours are perfectly marked. In addition to the detailed map of El Hierro, you will get from us precise indications of each route and assistance from the hotline on your walks.
We recommend
Appropriate hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the tours, it is necessary to have food and drink enough, as well as sun protection, a cap, wind jacket and, in the winter months, warm clothing.
Luggage transfer
We move your luggage from one accommodation to next, so on your hikes you should only carry a backpack with the essentials of the day. For the whole trip, it is recommendable to use a single suitcase, not bigger than 20 kg.
You can book at any date!
Tenerife North Airport (TFN), is the convenient airport to connect with your local flight to the island of El Hierro (VDE). Although there are also connections to El Hierro from Gran Canaria (LPA) with BINTERor CANARYFLY. The jump between islands takes about 40-50 minutes.
but if your flight lands at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), you may prefer to combine it with a nice fast-ferry sea crossing (2,5 hours) from Los Cristianos harbour. Two different companies, FRED OLSENand NAVIERA ARMAS, provide regular connections between Tenerife and El Hierro.
