Hiking on the Caldera rim

This is a route that starts at Roque de Los Muchachos itself and can be undertaken in several different ways without the need to know in advance which one you prefer to do.

One option is to walk along the GR 131 east direction, crossing the observatories, Pared de Roberto and  Degollada de Franceses view point. Up to this point you will have covered a distance of just 3 km, with low gradients.

Another option is to follow the GR 131 to Pico de La Cruz, finishing the route after 6 km and approximately 3.5 hours of walking.

The other possibility would be to continue to Pico de La Nieve, with a total distance of 12 km, 5.5 hours walking and steeper slopes.

The decision to do one route or the other can be made on the spot and at any of these points we will pick up the hikers for the return journey.

The transfer to “Roque de Los Muchachos”

From Los Cancajos or Santa Cruz de La Palma, the transfer to the starting point of this route takes approximately 55 minutes. The winding road climbs slowly towards the Roque de Los Muchachos, crossing up to 4 levels of vegetation. The bus continues to the highest point of La Palma (2.426 m) where the Roque de Los Muchachos is located.

Towards the Pico de La Nieve

Together with Roque de Los Muchachos (2426 m.) and Pico de La Cruz (2351 m.), Pico de La Nieve (2232 m.) is the third highest peak on La Palma. And when there is snow on the summits, this is a snowy peak that can be seen from any point of La Palma (except from the south). Hence its name.

The peaks of La Caldera

Mirca, 2 km from Santa Cruz, is the crossroads where the bus goes towards El Roque. From there it’s all hairpin bends and a road that climbs up to the Roque de Los Muchachos (2,426 m), crossing up to 4 levels of vegetation.

The GR 131 trail will take you along the edge of La Caldera de Taburiente in the direction of Pico de La Cruz, in a gentle up and down, leaving behind the various observatories. After 3.5 hours of walking you can end this route at the Pico de La Cruz (2,351 m) or continue for an additional 2 hours to the Pico de La Nieve (2,239 m), descending along the PR LP 3 to the car park.

We recommend suitable hiking clothing and sturdy footwear. During the routes, it is necessary to have enough food and drink, as well as sun protection, cap, light windbreaker and warm clothing in the winter months.
