Hiking to the Roof of the Island

From the Roque de Los Muchachos (2,426 m), bordering the peaks of the National Park, we passed the Los Andenes viewpoint and crossed the legendary Roberto’s Wall. All the way we are accompanied by the extraordinary views over the gigantic crater that makes up the Caldera de Taburiente.

Tour from Roque de Los Muchachos

A walk to the Roque de Los Muchachos on the island of La Palma.
Since the highest peak of La Palma is accessible by road, more and more passionate about nature are called to ascend the Roque de Los Muchachos to contemplate the island from almost 2,500 meters of altitude. Spectacular old roads run through these peaks that were once crossed by their people, dragging goods from one side of the island to the other.

Hiking along the GR131

Our tour begins at the Roque de Los Muchachos (2,426 meters) and runs through the rim along the GR131 to Pico de La Cruz (2,351 meters). Immediately we discover the imposing cliffs that flow into La Caldera de Taburiente: cliffs with a fall of up to 1,000 meters that form a semicircle of 27 km in perimeter. The views are spectacular and they reveal every little corner of the island. Our path winds gently through the row of peaks between small ascents and descents.

Mirador de Los Andenes

When we arrive at the Mirador de Los Andenes the view is directed towards the north. From east to west you can see all the little villages overlooking its steep coasts. The entire north of La Palma is covered by a blanket of green vegetation.

Roberto’s wall

A little further on the path crosses a basalt stone wall that seems to have been built by the hand of man. Roberto’s Wall, the origin of innumerable legends, originated as a consequence of the cooling of a magmatic mass that rose through a crevice in the mountain. Erosion and the passage of time have exposed this basalt dike.

The Roque de Los Muchachos observatory

The Roque de Los Muchachos Astrophysical Observatory is located very close to the highest peak: El Roque de Los Muchachos. Different metal domes house the cosmic observation instruments belonging to different European countries.

We reach the Roof of the Island

The last section of our path leads us to the highest peak on the island: El Roque de Los Muchachos. We are now 2,426 meters above sea level, and we dominate the entire island from a bird’s eye view.
