    La Gomera Walking Week

    VALLE GRAN REY

Why walking holidays in La Gomera?

On his voyages to the New Continent, Christopher Columbus used to stop in La Gomera to refuel and recharge his batteries before setting off on his Atlantic crossing. Who would have thought that 500 years later, La Gomera would be the object of desire of modern discoverers: hikers.

There are not many places in the world that, in such a small space, have such a rich and valuable natural ecosystem. La Gomera has recently been recognised as a Biosphere Reserve. It has a National Park of enormous botanical value and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

La Gomera, the last foothold for Columbus before crossing the unknown seas, is today an island appreciated by hikers from all over the world. An island where time seems to have stood still and which preserves extinct landscapes, vanished ways of life and forgotten legends. These coexist with charming settlements of multicoloured hamlets, whimsical manifestations of nature and a special light that varnishes the whole.

    Hiking tours in La Gomera

This is an island of very ancient volcanic origin. The passage of time has allowed erosion to act, gradually diluting its contours. From its central plateau, rising 1,300 metres above the sea, a system of deep ravines spreads out radially, reaching every corner of the island.

These ravines connect the villages and hamlets by the sea via winding paths. The paths ascend towards the central plateau, descending on the opposite side. And along the way, they show the island’s enormous biodiversity, both botanical in origin and its autochthonous fauna.

The hiking routes on La Gomera offer unparalleled diversity. The laurel forests, ancient botanical remains from the Tertiary period, are plant relics from a distant past that have survived to the present day.  The huge palm groves in the southern valleys, besides their beauty, are useful for the island’s economy thanks to palm honey. And the terraces and terraces on the northern slopes are cultivated in the traditional way with all kinds of products from the land.

All these diverse landscapes can be enjoyed walking through the ravines on the countless hiking trails on La Gomera walking week. In our one-week programme, we have selected the 5 most characteristic routes.

    Day 2

    Through the Arure Ravine

La Gomera Valle Gran Rey The first of our walks is a short, tentative route. It starts directly from Valle Gran Rey up the ravine in the direction of the bohemian village of El Guro, where residents from all over Europe have found their centre of the world.
Its landscaped slopes and imposing basalt walls indicate the entrance to the Barranco de Arure ravine. Following the course of the stream, we ascend the narrow ravine. The path is somewhat tortuous and forces us to jump from stone to stone until we reach the beautiful waterfall. With a 15-metre waterfall, its jet of water invites us to take a refreshing bath before continuing along the return path.
The route returns along the same riverbed towards the Casa de la Seda. From there, we start the descent along the path that runs parallel to the road in the direction of Valle Gran Rey. And in the afternoon a good swim awaits us at the swimming pool or at the well-known Playa del Inglés, just a few steps from the hotel.

Vallehermoso: from Chijeré Mount to the beach

    La Gomera Vallehermoso Santa Clara

From the northern village of Vallehermoso, a beautiful path leads through the ever-rising palm groves to the Teselinde massif..
The vegetation changes as we ascend. The scrubland gives way to lush forests of fayas and heather and then transforms into areas of eucalyptus when we reach the crests.
The path runs along the summit, crossing two old hermitages: Santa Clara and Nuestra Señora del Coromoto.  When you reach the Punta de Alcalá viewpoint, you will enjoy splendid views of the entire north coast of La Gomera, as well as the neighbouring islands of La Palma and Tenerife.
From there it is a steep descent along the zigzagging path until you reach Playa de Vallehermoso, an unspoilt beach of callao next to the natural pools where you can overlap and rest.

    Day 4

    From Las Hayas to Vallehermoso

On the central plateau of La Gomera, covered by a blanket of lush vegetation, a trail of small villages stretches out at 1000 metres above sea level. Las Hayas, popularised by the centenarian Doña Efigenia, is the starting point of today's route.
On the first section of the route we remain at a constant altitude, walking northwards into the Garajonay National Park.  The imposing laurel forests form a magical setting that recreates prehistoric times..
Gradually the path descends, entering the Barranco de la Cuesta ravine. After passing the Ermita del Carmen, the first houses and cultivated areas appear, with vineyards and fruit trees.  We go round the La Encantadora Dam, a picturesque reservoir that supplies water to the whole of the north of La Gomera.  Shortly after, we reach Vallehermoso after enjoying an idyllic rural setting, dotted with stone houses.

    Day 6

    Roque Agando, Benchijigua and Imada

La Gomera - Roque Agando The Roque Agando is a phenomenal monolith of basaltic rock that rises majestically in the centre of the island. We start our hike at an altitude of more than 1200 m near the Roque de Agando.  Our route starts next to this rock, crossing several viewpoints on both sides with views of the Benchijigua, El Cedro and Las Lajas ravines.
At the foot of Roque Agando the path descends through the Barranco de Benchijigua ravine, crossing a dense evergreen forest. The path descends steeply until it reaches the old village of Benchijigua, now in a state of semi-abandonment.
Now the route is more bearable and crosses old disused farming areas as we approach the village of Imada. A path with great views of the south coast that runs between verodes and tabaibas until it ends at the Ermita de Santa Ana hermitage.

Garajonay - National Park to Hermigua

La Gomera Hermigua senderismo en Canarias The last route of our programme takes us to the highest point of La Gomera: Mount Garajonay, at 1487 metres. After enjoying the extraordinary views of Pico del Teide and the neighbouring islands of El Hierro and La Palma, the trail begins a permanent descent through the most impressive laurel forest on the island: walking towards El Cedro.
It is a primitive and luxuriant forest, with heather and hundred-year-old laurel trees. Giant ferns invade the sides of the path and large bearded lichens hang from the trees, engulfing the landscape in a mystical atmosphere.
The Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Lourdes marks the end of the National Park and the route continues along the Barranco de Monteforte ravine towards El Cedro, a tiny hamlet situated in a clearing in the forest.
From El Cedro, the old cobbled path descends steeply towards Hermigua, crossing some picturesque enclaves and offering spectacular views towards the north coast.
