DAY 2

Stage 1: Figueres ▸ Sant Pere Pescador

This fascinating stage connects the surrealism of Figueres with the Mediterranean serenity of Sant Pere Pescador. The route unfolds across the Empordà plain, a landscape dominated by crop fields and infinite horizons that invite introspection.

The true heart of the trail beats upon entering the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l’Empordà. Here, the asphalt disappears to give way to paths and wooden walkways that wind through lagoons and reedbeds. It is a sanctuary of biodiversity where silence is only broken by the flapping of storks or the passing of deer.

Finally, following the course of the Fluvià river, you will make your entrance into Sant Pere Pescador after a relatively long but flat and very rewarding journey, in which the sea breeze will have been your faithful companion.

DAY 3

Stage 2: Sant Pere Pescador ▸ L’Escala

Today’s stage will be somewhat more relaxed and is an ode to the marine horizon and classical history. This section of the Camí de Ronda across the Bay of Roses is a leisurely yet visually stunning walk.

After leaving behind the vast dune beaches, you will walk with your feet almost in the sand, feeling the Mediterranean breeze in all its splendour until you reach the charming medieval village of Sant Martí d’Empúries.

You should not miss a stroll through the Ruins of Empúries: the path flanks the archaeological site of Empúries where the ancient Greek and Roman walls with the sea as a backdrop offer a mystical experience.

Upon arriving in L’Escala you are welcomed by a town with deep fishing traditions. A walk through its old town is a must and, of course, replenishing your energy by tasting its famous anchovies is essential.

This is a flat stage, bathed in sunshine and full of symbolism, ideal for leisurely enjoying the purest essence of the Costa Brava.

DAY 4

Stage 3: L’Escala ▸ L’Estartit

This stage represents the leap towards the most rugged and wild nature of the Costa Brava. Upon leaving L’Escala, the path enters the spectacular Cala Montgó, a crystal-clear bay sheltered from the tramontane wind that serves as a gateway to the Parc Natural del Montgrí.

From here, the trail abandons its flatness and becomes more demanding, rising above imposing limestone cliffs that fall sheer into the Mediterranean, forming small coves such as Cala Farriola.

It is an itinerary of contrasts, where the scent of pine and rosemary accompanies you as you skirt the massif along rocky paths. The effort culminates upon reaching the Cap de la Barra, already in L’Estartit. From this natural balcony, the reward is one of Catalonia’s most iconic views: the Illes Medes emerging from the deep blue directly before your eyes.

DAY 5

Stage 4: L’Estartit▸ Peratallada

Today’s route represents a fascinating change of scenery: we leave behind the salt air of the coast to venture into the heart of the “Empordanet”, where the landscape becomes agricultural, unhurried and deeply medieval.

After leaving L’Estartit and walking inland, the path crosses the fertile plain of the Baix Empordà following the course of the Ter river. The imposing presence of the Castell del Montgrí, a medieval fortress crowning the mountain, will accompany you until you reach the historic town of Torroella de Montgrí.

The inland route will take you to Gualta, a charming small medieval village. Further on, the crowning jewel is your arrival at one of Catalonia’s most beautiful villages. Entering Peratallada is like stepping back in time; its streets carved from living rock, its walls and moat transport you directly to the 10th century. Today’s stretch will have been flat and gentle, perfect for enjoying the peace of the countryside and ending the day with a glass of local wine among centuries-old stone walls.

DAY 6

Stage 5: Peratallada▸ Begur

This legendary path is a journey through the most romantic essence of the Empordà, connecting two of Catalonia’s most spectacular medieval ensembles before reuniting with the sea. Leaving Peratallada, the trail enters an area of gentle reliefs and rural paths that exude tranquillity.

The silhouette of Pals soon appears on the horizon, rising on a hill. It is well worth strolling through its Gothic quarter, which is literally like walking through an open-air museum. From the Josep Pla viewpoint the view of the Empordà plain with the Medes Islands in the background is an image that will be etched in your retinas forever.

The path towards Begur becomes more shadowed and aromatic, crossing dense pine forests that signal the proximity of the coast. The final ascent rewards you with a village, Begur, full of life and famous for its castle and its vibrant Indian Houses.

DAY 7

Stage 6: Begur▸ La Fosca (Palamós)

Today you will walk the Heart of the Costa Brava: from Begur to La Fosca. This is the “crown jewel” of the Girona coastline. This stretch of the Camí de Ronda is an unceasing display of Mediterranean postcards connecting the grandeur of Begur with the authentic maritime character of Palamós.

After descending through the hills of Begur, the path winds between pines and cliffs until reaching Llafranc and a little further on, Calella de Palafrugell. Villages of white façades and wooden boats resting on the sand that are the refuge of the habanera spirit; a route that is pure visual delight.

The final stretch gifts you with tunnels carved into the rock and secret coves before flowing into La Fosca, the iconic beach of Palamós, guarded by the Castle of Sant Esteve.

DAY 8

Stage 7: La Fosca (Palamós)▸ Sant Feliu de Guixols

The seventh stage plays out between luxury and tradition. The route is a display of contrasts that will take you from the vibrant port activity of Palamós to the most exquisite architectural elegance in Sant Feliu de Guixols.

After leaving behind the serenity of La Fosca and rounding the port of Palamós, the path opens onto the wide bay of Sant Antoni de Calonge, a flat and luminous walk where the sea remains constantly at your side.

But the soul of this stage awakens upon entering the Platja d’Aro area. Here, the path becomes “playful”, winding through tunnels carved into the rock and peeking out over turquoise-watered coves such as Cala del Pi, which seem lifted from a postcard. The route culminates in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, a historic maritime city, famous for its majestic monastery and welcoming atmosphere.

DAY 9

Stage 8: Sant Feliu de Guixols▸ Tossa de Mar

The section of the Camí de Ronda between Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Tossa de Mar is, without doubt, one of the most spectacular stretches of the entire Costa Brava. A path with abundant elevation changes and vertiginous cliffs among pine forests that almost touch the sea.

Every step brings its reward and treats you to incredible views. You will discover hidden coves that look like postcards, such as Cala Bona or Cala Pola, ideal for a proper snorkelling dip in their crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Twenty-two kilometres of pure nature, the smell of salt and breathtaking Mediterranean views. If you love adventure, this hike is an absolute must. Bring good footwear and plenty of water!

Along the way you encounter coves of singular beauty such as Cala Canyelles and the picturesque Sa Caleta. A stretch with continuous elevation changes and staircases sculpted in stone, but rewarded with exceptional panoramic views of the coastline.

CAMINS DE RONDA ▸ COSTA BRAVA

This journey is a sensory experience that unites the genius of Dalí with the serenity of the Mediterranean. Departing from Figueres, the asphalt quickly gives way to the flat paths of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà. Here, silence is broken only by the wingbeats of migratory birds over the lagoons, creating an oasis of peace before venturing into the heart of Catalan history.

From the Silence of Stone to the Infinite Blue

Heading south, the landscape turns ochre in Peratallada, where the walls and carved stone streets seem frozen in time. After this medieval immersion, the route ascends to the watchtower of Begur, a privileged balcony over the coast. From here, the Camí de Ronda guides us along impossible cliffs and crystal-clear coves, winding through pine trees until reaching the maritime bustle of Palamós.

Finally, the route continues along the rugged cliffs and hidden coves along the stretch of coastline from Tossa de Mar to Blanes

History between land and sea: The Camin de Ronda at the Costa Brava

The Camin de Ronda was born out of necessity, not pleasure. During the 18th century, the Spanish Crown organised a coastguard corps to curb the smuggling that flourished along this fragmented and difficult-to-monitor coastline. The carabineros — as these agents were called — patrolled on foot, day and night, a path that faithfully followed the edge of the cliffs, peering into every cove, descending to every beach, to leave no corner unexamined.

The path they walked was functional, austere, shaped by the urgency of controlling a territory that the sea made elusive.

The Empordà, the historic region encompassing both the Alt and Baix Empordà, had powerful reasons to tempt smugglers.

Its proximity to the French border, its dozens of hidden coves and the maritime traditioncamins de ronda of villages such as Cadaqués, Roses or L’Escala turned this coastal strip into a back door through which textiles, tobacco, spices and everything that tariffs made excessively expensive would circulate.

Local fishermen knew every nook and cranny and frequently collaborated in these illegal trade networks, which supplemented an always precarious economy.

With the 20th century and the decline of organised smuggling, the path lost its original purpose but gained another: first as a communication route between villages previously isolated by the rugged geography, and later as a route of discovery for the first tourists who arrived drawn by the singular light of Cap de Creus. The writer Josep Pla, a son of the Empordà, walked it and described it with his dense yet luminous prose, turning the landscape into literature and the path into a symbol of a collective identity that lives on.

South of Palamós: the stretch few people walk

Most people who walk the Camins de Ronda stop at Palamós. The three stages that follow are the hardest on the route and the least known: 60 kilometres and 1,600 metres of climbing along cliffs that drop straight into the water.

From Palamós to Sant Feliu de Guíxols the path threads through Cala Canyet and Sant Pol, with pines growing down to the shoreline. Sant Feliu still has its tenth-century Benedictine monastery and the Porta Ferrada, one of the most unusual pre-Romanesque structures in Catalonia.
The next stage, on to Tossa de Mar, is the toughest of the whole trip: 22 kilometres with 849 metres of ascent along a coastline with almost no road access. The reward is arriving at the Vila Vella, the only fortified medieval quarter left anywhere on the Catalan coast, its twelfth-century towers looking out over the Mediterranean.
The final day, Tossa to Blanes, closes the walk past Cala Bona and Santa Cristina to the Marimurtra botanical garden, where the Costa Brava officially ends.

The Costa Brava on foot: what you’ll find along the way

The Costa Brava stretches from Blanes to the French border at Portbou, and it is one of the most spectacular coastlines in the Mediterranean. Its name says it all: a rugged coast of cliffs that drop into the sea in shades of ochre and slate, interspersed with turquoise coves. The Camins de Ronda follow it along the very edge, where the road cannot reach.

A walk of contrasts
This programme begins where you would least expect it: on flat ground. The first two stages cross the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, a wetland of lagoons and reed beds where the only sound is birdsong. It is a gentle start, almost level, before the path turns towards the sea.
From L’Escala onwards the profile changes. Empúries, the Medes Islands off L’Estartit and the cliffs of the Montgrí hint at what is coming. The route then turns inland to pass through Gualta and Peratallada, one of the best-preserved medieval villages in Catalonia, before returning to the coast at Begur.
South of Begur comes the most photogenic stretch of all: Aiguablava, Tamariu, Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell follow one another in a succession of coves and pine-shaded paths. And beyond Palamós begins the hardest and least walked part of the route, three stages totalling 60 kilometres and 1,600 metres of ascent all the way to Blanes.

When to walk it
Spring and autumn are the best seasons. In May and June the Mediterranean vegetation — pines, wild olive, rosemary and esparto — is at its finest and the heat has not yet set in. In September and October the golden light of dusk turns every viewpoint into a postcard, and the sea is still warm. July and August are perfectly walkable, but it gets hot, the coves fill up and accommodation prices rise.

What you’ll need
Hiking shoes with non-slip soles: stretches over wet rock can be treacherous. Plenty of water, sun protection and a hat, as some sections go for kilometres without shade. The path follows the GR 92 and is generally well signposted, although in places the waymarks become sparse or get confused with the turnings down to the coves. That is why we give you our app with offline GPS navigation and a description of every stage: you need nothing else to find your way, not even phone coverage.

More than a path
What makes this walk unique is not just its physical beauty. It is the experience of moving at the rhythm of the sea, hearing the waves breaking beneath your feet, discovering a hidden cove reachable only on foot, or sitting at dusk on a headland with the Mediterranean blazing orange before you. In an increasingly fast-paced world, this path gives the walker back something essential: the pleasure of going slowly and truly looking.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What route does this programme follow?

Nine stages and 163 kilometres from Figueres to Blanes, walking from village to village along the whole of the Costa Brava. The stages run from Figueres to Sant Pere Pescador, then on to L'Escala, L'Estartit, Peratallada, Begur, La Fosca (Palamós), Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Tossa de Mar and finally Blanes. Eleven days in total, with ten nights of hotel accommodation.

How does this differ from your 6-stage programme?

This trip walks the Caminos de Ronda in full, all the way to Blanes; the 6-stage version covers the northern half and finishes at La Fosca, in Palamós. The first six days are identical. The difference lies in the last three stages, the most demanding of the route: 60 kilometres and around 1,600 metres of ascent between Palamós, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Tossa de Mar and Blanes.

How many kilometres and how much ascent per day?

Between 12.9 and 22.5 kilometres per stage, with 3,102 metres of total ascent. The trip gets progressively harder: the first two days across the Empordà wetlands are almost entirely flat, and the climbing is concentrated towards the end. The toughest stage is Sant Feliu de Guíxols to Tossa de Mar, with 22 kilometres and 849 metres of ascent.

How fit do I need to be?

Difficulty 3 out of 5. You'll need good fitness and regular walking experience: eleven days with nine days of walking, and the last three climb and descend without respite along the clifftops. There are no technical sections or scrambling, but plenty of hours on uneven ground.

What will I see along the way?

The Empordà wetlands and the mouth of the River Fluvià at the start, the Greek and Roman site of Empúries beside L'Escala, the Medes Islands off L'Estartit, medieval Peratallada, the coves of Begur and Aiguablava, the monastery and the Porta Ferrada at Sant Feliu de Guíxols, the Vila Vella of Tossa de Mar — the only fortified medieval quarter left on the Catalan coast — and the Marimurtra botanical garden in Blanes.

    What's included in the price?

Ten nights in hotels and apartments along the Costa Brava with breakfast, daily luggage transfer between accommodation, our app with offline GPS navigation and stage descriptions, and phone support throughout your trip. The full breakdown is in the Prices section.

    What's not included?

Travel to Figueres and onward from Blanes, and lunches and dinners. All the accommodation is in towns with a good choice of places to eat, so you're free to decide each evening.

How do I book, and how do I pay?

A deposit per person secures your booking, which we confirm within 24 hours once we've checked availability. The balance is due 30 days before your arrival date. Exact amounts are in the Prices section.

    What is the cancellation policy?

Up to 21 days before your arrival date, 100% of the amount paid is refunded, except for the deposit, which is non-refundable. After that the refund decreases in stages; the full breakdown is in the Prices section.

    Is luggage transferred between stages?

Yes, and it's included in the price. We collect your luggage each morning from your accommodation and deliver it to the next one before you arrive, so you walk with nothing but a daypack.

How do I get to Figueres, and how do I get back from Blanes?

Figueres has a high-speed rail station, which makes it very easy to arrive by train from Barcelona, Madrid or France. Alternatively, you can fly into Girona-Costa Brava or Barcelona-El Prat. For the return, Blanes is well connected to Barcelona by local train: a little over an hour and a half to Sants.

How do I find my way on the route?

The path mostly follows the GR-92, with red and white waymarks; at some points the marking becomes sparse or gets confused with the turnings down to the coves. That's why we give you our app with offline GPS navigation, tracks for all nine stages and a description of each one.

    What should I pack?

A 20 to 25 litre daypack, a litre and a half of water, a hat and sunglasses, sun cream, a lightweight waterproof and food for the day. Trail shoes or low walking boots with good grip are ideal. And don't forget your swimming things — the coves are hard to resist.

When is the best time to go?

The programme runs from 1 March to 31 October. Spring and autumn are the best: mild temperatures, fewer people and a sea that's still warm in September. July and August are perfectly doable, but it gets hot and the coves fill up.

If you have any further questions that haven’t been covered here, please have a look at the general FAQs section or get in touch with our team. We have extensive knowledge of the Costa Brava and the many opportunities they offer for hiking at your own pace.

We had a fantastic experience with Natour Travel while hiking the GR131 on Tenerife. Our first contact with Natour actually started some time ago, when we were looking into hiking the GR131 on Gran Canaria. We got in touch with Belén and immediately had a very positive impression of Natour and the way they work. Eventually, we changed our plans from Gran Canaria to Tenerife and we are very happy that we decided to organise this trip with Natour. They arranged everything around the hike: our accommodations, luggage transport from one hotel to the next, and transfers to and from the start and finish points of the different stages. Everything worked perfectly, allowing us to simply focus on hiking and enjoying Tenerife. What really stood out was their flexibility. On several days we finished our hike much earlier than the estimated time, sometimes almost two hours early. It was never a problem. We simply got in touch, Natour contacted the taxi company, and our pickup was moved forward. No hassle, no complicated arrangements just quick, friendly and practical service. Exactly what you want after a long day of hiking! We previously organised our GR131 hikes on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura completely ourselves, including all accommodations and logistics. Having now experienced how easy and enjoyable Natour makes this, we already know that we will use them again for the remaining islands. Gran Canaria, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma are still on our GR131 list and Natour will definitely be our first choice to organise them. A huge thank you to Miguel, Belén and everyone involved for the excellent organisation, personal contact and incredible flexibility. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Highly recommended for anyone planning a hiking trip in the Canary Islands!

Natour were fast, efficient and friendly from the start. We've walked thousands of Kms of trails all over the world, but those Natour pulled together for us were spectacular - some of the best we've experienced. They maintain contact via WhatsApp and were flexible around our wants and needs. Everything came together very smoothly. I'd recommend them strongly.

Natour travel organised our walking holiday on Fuerteventura very well - all the details were taken care of. The accommodation was great, and we enjoyed walking the GR131 route. The weather was cooler than we expected, but this made the walking easier. We'll definitely use Natour again for another Canary Island adventure! John

We booked a 7 day self guided walking holiday with Miguel from Natour. It was very well organised and we had a meeting with Miguel the day before we started walking to discuss the route and logistics. The walking was scenic and varied. The combination of taxis and buses to and from trailheads worked well. The hotels were comfortable, clean and friendly. Miguel was also available to rearrange a taxi drop off point when we needed modify a walk due to poor weather. I would be happy to recommend Miguel and Natour to others thinking of booking a self guided walking holiday.

Natour developed a bespoke accommodation and walking plan for 4 people on a recent 1 week holiday to Menorca - walking the Cami de Cavalls. This included researching suitable hotels to our budget and arranging for our luggage to be collected and moved between hotels each day. They provided maps via the platform Outdooractive. They kept in constant touch with us by What's App throughout the trip. I would thoroughly recommend their services to anyone considering a walking holiday in Menorca.

The true heart of the trail beats upon entering the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà.

    Stage 2: Sant Pere Pescador ▸ L'Escala

Today's stage will be somewhat more relaxed and is an ode to the marine horizon and classical history. This section of the Camí de Ronda across the Bay of Roses is a leisurely yet visually stunning walk.
After leaving behind the vast dune beaches, you will walk with your feet almost in the sand, feeling the Mediterranean breeze in all its splendour until you reach the charming medieval village of Sant Martí d'Empúries.
You should not miss a stroll through the Ruins of Empúries: the path flanks the archaeological site of Empúries where the ancient Greek and Roman walls with the sea as a backdrop offer a mystical experience.
Upon arriving in L'Escala you are welcomed by a town with deep fishing traditions. A walk through its old town is a must and, of course, replenishing your energy by tasting its famous anchovies is essential.
This is a flat stage, bathed in sunshine and full of symbolism, ideal for leisurely enjoying the purest essence of the Costa Brava.

    Stage 3: L'Escala ▸ L'Estartit

This stage represents the leap towards the most rugged and wild nature of the Costa Brava. Upon leaving L'Escala, the path enters the spectacular Cala Montgó, a crystal-clear bay sheltered from the tramontane wind that serves as a gateway to the Parc Natural del Montgrí.
The effort culminates upon reaching the Cap de la Barra, already in L'Estartit. From this natural balcony, the reward is one of Catalonia's most iconic views: the Illes Medes emerging from the deep blue directly before your eyes.

    Stage 4: L'Estartit▸ Peratallada

Today's route represents a fascinating change of scenery: we leave behind the salt air of the coast to venture into the heart of the "Empordanet", where the landscape becomes agricultural, unhurried and deeply medieval.
After leaving L'Estartit and walking inland, the path crosses the fertile plain of the Baix Empordà following the course of the Ter river. The imposing presence of the Castell del Montgrí, a medieval fortress crowning the mountain, will accompany you until you reach the historic town of Torroella de Montgrí.
The inland route will take you to Gualta, a charming small medieval village. Further on, the crowning jewel is your arrival at one of Catalonia's most beautiful villages. Entering Peratallada is like stepping back in time; its streets carved from living rock, its walls and moat transport you directly to the 10th century. Today's stretch will have been flat and gentle, perfect for enjoying the peace of the countryside and ending the day with a glass of local wine among centuries-old stone walls.

    Stage 5: Peratallada▸ Begur

This legendary path is a journey through the most romantic essence of the Empordà, connecting two of Catalonia's most spectacular medieval ensembles before reuniting with the sea.

Stage 6: Begur▸ La Fosca (Palamós)

Today you will walk the Heart of the Costa Brava: from Begur to La Fosca. This is the "crown jewel" of the Girona coastline.

But the soul of this stage awakens upon entering the Platja d'Aro area. Here, the path becomes "playful", winding through tunnels carved into the rock and peeking out over turquoise-watered coves such as Cala del Pi, which seem lifted from a postcard. The route culminates in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, a historic maritime city, famous for its majestic monastery and welcoming atmosphere.
