THE GR 221 AND ITS HISTORY
The extensive network of paths that cross the Serra de Tramuntana was used by shepherds and farmers, lime burners, hunters and snow collectors alike. Pilgrims heading to the pilgrimage site of Lluc also used these paths.
These paths were laid out according to a specific construction plan. Paved and supported by walls. These dry stone walls are not held together with mortar or cement, but by a sophisticated assembly of stones, which gives the walls their stability. The so-called margers – the builders of dry stone walls is a professional group that also built the boundary walls of plots, fields and terraces and that was also needed for road boundaries.
With the arrival of modern crash barriers, asphalted roads and motorways, this profession was on the verge of disappearing. In view of the situation, the Island Council founded a masonry school in Sóller where the old trade could be learnt. This took place in 1986 and, since then, some of the roads that had disappeared have been rebuilt. The first major project was the restoration of the pilgrims’ path through the Biniaraix ravine to the Coll de l’Ofre. Over time, the idea of creating a hiking trail through the entire Serra de Tramuntana grew. Extensive work is currently underway to widen the passes piece by piece.
Today, these paths are used by both Mallorcans and hiking enthusiasts.

Highlights of the trip:
Serra de Tramuntana: a trail from village to village

Mallorca: through the Serra de Tramuntana
The Serra de Tramuntana is one of the most impressive natural landscapes on the island of Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, Spain. With its rugged peaks, stone villages and winding roads, the Serra de Tramuntana stretches across the northwest of the island, offering landscapes that seem to be straight out of a fairy tale. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2011, the Serra de Tramuntana is not only a refuge for nature lovers, but also a symbol of Mallorcan history and identity.
The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range is home to a great ecological diversity. Its forests of holm oaks, pines and ancient olive trees are interspersed with steep cliffs and deep ravines, forming a unique environment. The Mediterranean climate of the Serra de Tramuntana allows for the coexistence of a wide variety of plant and animal species, many of them endemic. In addition, the landscapes offered by the Serra de Tramuntana change with the seasons, making it an attractive destination all year round.
One of the most captivating aspects of the Sierra de Tramuntana is its network of trails, which invite you to discover its secrets on foot or by bicycle. The famous Dry Stone Route (Ruta de Pedra en Sec) runs through a large part of the Serra de Tramuntana and connects villages such as Deià, Valldemossa, Sóller and Pollença, each with its own charm. These villages, nestled in the Serra de Tramuntana, preserve a traditional architecture that blends in perfectly with the surroundings.
The Serra de Tramuntana is also known for its history and its culture. Monasteries, historic estates and ancient irrigation systems such as canals and fountains are witnesses to the ingenuity of past generations. The cultivated terraces that cover the slopes are a perfect example of how the inhabitants have known how to adapt to difficult terrain, respecting the natural balance.
Many visitors are amazed by the tranquillity of the Tramuntana mountains. Their landscapes invite contemplation, and it is common to see artists and photographers trying to capture the beauty of their nooks and crannies. The Tramuntana mountains have inspired poets, painters and writers, becoming the muse of countless works.
From the top of its peaks, such as Puig Major —the highest point on the island—, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the valleys that make up the Serra de Tramuntana. The road that crosses it offers an unparalleled panoramic route, ideal for those who want to explore by car or motorbike.
Despite tourism, the Serra de Tramuntana has managed to maintain its essence. Conservation initiatives and respect for the environment are essential to preserve this natural treasure. The Serra de Tramuntana is much more than a tourist destination: it is a living ecosystem, a cultural jewel and a legacy for future generations.
In short, is a place that visitors fall in love with. Whether it is for its natural value, its historical richness or its magical atmosphere, the Serra de Tramuntana is one of those corners of the world that leaves an indelible mark on the heart. To explore it to enter a world of serene beauty, where each step reveals a new wonder. Thus, the Serra de Tramuntana becomes an essential destination, a sensory and emotional experience that defines the very soul of Mallorca.
