The Azores Islands, an enchanting archipelago in the mid-Atlantic Ocean, is a Portuguese autonomous region consisting of nine volcanic islands. Renowned for their dramatic landscapes, vibrant flora, and rich marine life, the Azores Islands offer a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The Azores islands are divided into three groups: the Eastern Group (São Miguel and Santa Maria), the Central Group (Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, and Faial), and the Western Group (Flores and Corvo). Each island boasts its own unique charm. São Miguel, the largest island, is famed for its stunning crater lakes, such as Lagoa do Fogo and Sete Cidades, and the hot springs in Furnas. Pico Island, home to Portugal’s highest peak, Pico Mountain, is a haven for climbers and wine enthusiasts alike, with its UNESCO-listed vineyard culture.
The surrounding waters of the Azores islands are a sanctuary for marine life, making the archipelago one of the best destinations for whale watching. Sperm whales, blue whales, and dolphins are commonly spotted, offering an unforgettable experience for visitors. The Azores islands’ rich marine biodiversity also makes it a popular spot for diving, with vibrant underwater ecosystems teeming with life.
The Azores’ culture is a tapestry woven from centuries of maritime history. The islands were discovered and settled by the Portuguese in the 15th century, and their strategic location made them a crossroads for various cultures and a haven for sailors. This historical confluence is evident in the Azores islands’ architecture, cuisine, and traditions. The colorful festivals, such as the Holy Spirit Festivals and the Sanjoaninas, reflect the islands’ deep-rooted religious and cultural traditions.
In recent years, the Azores islands have gained recognition for their commitment to sustainable tourism. The islands’ pristine natural environments are protected by strict conservation laws, and eco-friendly tourism practices are encouraged. This approach has helped preserve the unique landscapes and ecosystems, making the Azores islands a model for sustainable travel destinations.
São Miguel, the largest and most populous island of the Azores islands archipelago, is often referred to as “The Green Island” due to its lush landscapes and verdant hills. Located in the Eastern Group of the Azores, São Miguel offers a captivating mix of natural wonders, cultural heritage, and vibrant local life.
São Miguel is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, highlighted by its crater lakes, hot springs, and volcanic landscapes. The Sete Cidades, a massive volcanic crater housing two lakes—one green and one blue—creates a mesmerizing contrast that is among the island’s most iconic sights. Lagoa do Fogo, another spectacular crater lake, is set amidst a nature reserve and offers breathtaking views and serene surroundings.

Day 2
Lagoa das Furnas ▸ Pico do Gaspar
The first route starts directly at the hotel and paths back to it in a circular way. The trail goes along the Lagoa das Furnas, a lake with calm waters and a serene environment, surrounded by lush vegetation.
Throughout the tour you can observe "fumaroles" and pools of hot water, the result of geothermal activity in the area. On the shore of the lake, you will find the famous caldeiras, where the traditional "cozido das Furnas" is cooked. Here, the pots are buried in the hot volcanic soil to cook slowly and give it its peculiar flavour.
From the southern end of the lake, a path leads you on a continuous ascent to the top of Pico do Gaspar. From an altitude of 500 metres above the sea, Pico do Gaspar offers a spectacular view of the region, with Lagoa das Furnas at your feet.

Day 3
Lomba do Cavaleiro▸Ribeira Quente
After a short transfer to the peaceful village of Lomba do Cavaleiro, the route follows the path along the southern coastline of São Miguel, with the permanent view of the sea as a backdrop.
Leaving the village behind, the path climbs upwards through a leafy area, interspersed with crop fields. The path then descends steadily, crossing several "miradouros" (viewpoints) and picturesque spots.
After reaching Ribeira Quente, it is worth going to Praia do Fogo for a swim and perhaps a good "cozido" in a local restaurant, before returning to Furnas.

Day 4
Salto do Prego▸Faial da Terra
After ascending the Pico dos Bodes (483 metres above sea level) and enjoying the splendid views of its "miradouro", the trail enters a lush forest towards the village of Sanguinho until it reaches the Salto do Prego, a waterfall of approx. 20 metres that forms a beautiful natural pool where you can take a bath.
The route now continues to Salto do Cagarrão, a little further north. This is another small waterfall with a natural pool and after visiting it we must return along the same path until we find the road that leads to Faial da Terra.
The village of Faial da Terra is a small fishing village in a fertile valley in the south of São Miguel. The stream flows down to an unsuitable callao beach. At the end of the route you can enjoy a tasty lunch of "peixe" (fish) in one of the local "cantinhas" (canteens).

Today the trail will take us along the gorgeous northern coast. Starts at Ribeira Funda and goes through diverse enclaves: Maia, Porto Fermoso and finally, Praia dos Moinhos, a beautiful beach of fine black sand where you could have a bath after the walk
The track crosses over a few cliffs of low altitude, traversing a lush countryside where the blue sea is the main protagonist. For the grand finale, this route will take you to the sunny beach where you could also enjoy a good meal while waiting for our driver to take you to your next hotel in Ponta Delgada.

Day 6
Lagoa do Fogo▸Praia Agua d'Alto
After a short transfer we start the route to Lagoa do Fogo, one of the wildest spots in the Azores. Framed within a protected natural area, the route takes us through a "levada" (water channel) to an altitude of 575 metres above sea level.
From the crests of the lagoon we can see the whole island. The path then follows a descending course towards the south coast, through valleys and mountains, ending at the Agua d'Alto beach.
A spectacular walking tour with countless panoramic views culminating in a swim in the Atlantic before returning to Ponta Delgada.

Day 7
Sete Cidades
Sete Cidades is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the island of São Miguel. It is a collection of ancient volcanic craters whose sedimentary bed is home to spectacular lakes. Around it are the villages that give the unique enclave its name.
Sete Cidades is located in the northwest corner of the island. It is an area of lush vegetation, woodland and extensive meadows of lush green where the gentle cattle keep the grass thin and the grasses thin.
After a longer than usual transfer, the route starts at the top of the caldera, descending gradually towards the lakes. A splendid hiking route that leaves everyone fascinated.
