DAY 2

to SANTA MARIA | Vila do Porto ▸ Malbusca
Airport pickup and transfer to the starting point in Vila do Porto (Forte de São Brás, 5 minutes from the airport).
The first day starts with an easy opening stage that runs through rural roads and the south coast, with the first volcanic cliffs as the main attractions. The landscape combines open countryside, coast and Atlantic vegetation in a practically uncrowded environment.
The Malbusca refuge is located 400 meters off the trail, on top of a hill. Don’t miss the sunset over the sea — one of the most spectacular of the entire route.
12.2 km ↗ 612 m ↘ 428 m
Malbusca shelter (Santa Maria)
DAY 3

SANTA MARIA | Malbusca ▸ Lapa
The second stage leaves the coast to venture into the rural heart of the island. The trail runs through quiet paths between green and agricultural areas, with a more inland character and a sense of complete isolation.
The landscape gradually changes: cultivated fields, Atlantic forests and meadows succeed each other in an environment of absolute calm, far from mass tourism.
The Lapa Refuge is located right next to the trail, in a beautiful protected valley surrounded by fields and forests. For one night, you’ll forget that you’re on an island.
The most relaxed stage of the route — ideal for regaining strength and preparing for the more demanding sections.

Lapa shelter (Santa Maria)
DAY 4

SANTA MARIA | Lapa ▸ Norte
The third stage is the longest and most varied of the route. The terrain becomes more demanding, with moderate climbs and a gradual return to the coast, offering some of the most open views of the ocean of the entire journey.
During the journey it is possible to see the island of São Miguel in the distance and, with good visibility, locate the Formigas islets, located between Santa Maria and São Miguel and marked by a lighthouse.
The Norte Refuge is located just 50 meters from the trail, facing Casa do Norte, with clear views of the ocean. Only the gentle mooing of cows could disturb this place of absolute calm. The refuge has binoculars available.
14.4 km ↗ 555 m ↘ 585 m
Norte shelter (Santa Maria)
DAY 5

SANTA MARIA | Norte ▸ Raposo
The fourth stage is the most wild and spectacular of the route. The terrain becomes more dramatic, with descents to the sea, volcanic zones and an untamed coast that surprises at every bend of the trail.
The path runs between hidden bays and volcanic formations, with possible swimming areas at the most accessible points on the coast.
The Raposo Refuge takes its name from the nearby bay and is one of the most magical places on the entire route. From June onwards, at night you can hear the eerie sound of Cory’s Shearwaters — sometimes they fly by at high speed near the windows. An experience you’ll never forget.

DAY 6

SANTA MARIA | Raposo ▸ Vila do Porto
The final stage closes the circle. The last section is the most accessible of the route, with a gradual return to civilization that allows you to enjoy the landscape with the satisfaction of having completed the 70 km route around Santa Maria.
The trail leads back to Vila do Porto, the starting and ending point of this circular route, passing through coastal and rural areas that sum up everything experienced during the previous days.
Upon arrival, one last night in a hotel to celebrate the completion of the route. Congratulations! 🎉 A good dinner at a local restaurant is the perfect finale to this adventure.

Circling Santa Maria in the Azores along the GR 1
Santa Maria island, in the Azores archipelago, unfolds like an emerald treasure in the vast Atlantic Ocean. From a distance, its soft, undulating hills are sketched like brushstrokes of intense green on the deep blue canvas of the sea. As you approach, you can perceive the serene murmur of waves caressing the coasts of golden sand, while seagulls describe graceful circles in the clear sky.
Santa Maria is the oldest island in the Azores and the only one where you’ll find marine fossils: it rose out of the Atlantic eight million years ago, and the shell beds embedded in the rock at Pedreira do Campo are still there to prove it. This self-guided hike circles the whole island in 5 stages, crossing half a dozen protected geosites of the Azores UNESCO Geopark — the red desert of Barreiro da Faneca, the basalt-column waterfall at Ribeira de Maloás, the vine-terraced amphitheatre of São Lourenço bay. You sleep in mountain shelters, old stone barns rebuilt with traditional materials, and your luggage can travel by road while you walk light. Eight days in all, counting the inter-island flight from São Miguel and the hotel nights at either end.Small villages of white houses with red tile roofs nestle between hills and valleys, as if they were jewels scattered by a careful craftsman. Cobbled streets wind between the buildings, leading visitors to discover welcoming squares and corners full of history and tradition. In the center of these towns, ancient churches stand with quiet dignity, their bell towers echoing with the echo of times past.
In the heart of Santa Maria, the landscape becomes more dramatic and mysterious. Mountains rise majestically, clothed in lush forests where the trails of the GR1SMA invite adventurers to lose themselves in nature for 5 days. Waterfalls fall in curtains of crystal, feeding streams that whisper ancient stories to those who stop to listen.Nights in the refuges have a magic of their own. Under a sky full of stars, silence becomes palpable, broken only by the distant song of Cory’s Shearwaters or the whisper of wind through the trees. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where the soul can find profound and renewing peace.

The GR 1 of Santa Maria is not just a route; it is a living poem, an ode to natural beauty and serenity, a corner of the world where each sunrise from the cliffs and each sunset from the refuges paint a unique and fleeting picture on the horizon of the soul.
Santa Maria island (Azores) is a poem made into an island, a masterpiece of creation where every element, from the smallest flower to the imposing volcanic cliff, contributes to a perfect harmony. It is an island where the traveler will find beauty at every turn of the trail, a refuge for the soul and a feast for the senses.

Frequently Asked Questions
What fitness level do I need for this Azores hike?
This is a moderate trek (▲▲△△△): 69.5 km across 5 stages, with a cumulative 2,416 metres of ascent and 2,411 of descent. Days range from 8.7 to 21.4 km, so some are gentle and others are long. The terrain isn't technical, but Azorean weather turns fast and a few sections are lightly waymarked. If you walk regularly and can handle consecutive days, you'll be fine.
How are the 5 stages divided?
The route is circular, starting and finishing in Vila do Porto: first to Malbusca along the south coast (12.2 km); Malbusca to Lapa, heading into the rural interior (12.8 km); Lapa to Norte, the most varied stage (14.4 km); Norte to Raposo, the shortest and a good recovery day (8.7 km); and Raposo back to Vila do Porto, the longest of the route (21.4 km). Either side of these sit the arrival in São Miguel, the inter-island flight and the return.
Where do I sleep?
Four nights in the shelters along the trail and three in hotels: the Hotel Alcides in Ponta Delgada (São Miguel) on arrival and departure, and the Charming Blue in Vila do Porto on Santa Maria. The shelters are old stone barns rebuilt with ecological materials, in shared dormitories sleeping up to six, with drinking water, a hot shower (solar or wood-heated), a basic kitchen, a wood stove and USB power.
Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?
Yes. The shelters have no blankets or bedding, so a sleeping bag is essential for the four nights on the trail. It's the only specific item you'll need beyond standard hiking kit.
If you'd rather not carry one on the plane, you don't have to: the most complete option of the programme comes with a sleeping bag and towels waiting for you on the island, together with luggage transfer. You'll find it broken down in the Prices tab.
Is luggage transfer included?
It depends on the option you choose: it isn't part of the base price, but it is included in the most complete option of the programme, along with the sleeping bag and towels. You can compare all three in the Prices tab.
If you book it, we move your bag from shelter to shelter — maximum 8 kg per person — and you walk with just a day pack. If you'd rather go without, bear in mind you'll also be carrying your sleeping bag and the day's food, which tells on the longer stages.
Any luggage you don't need on the trail can be left at the hotel in Vila do Porto, where you spend your last night on the island.
When is the best time of year for hiking in the Azores?
The programme runs from 1 April to 31 October. Summer (June to September) gives the most settled, driest weather, and it's when the handful of bars on the route are open. Spring and autumn are just as beautiful — greener island, fewer people — but wetter. Whatever the month, expect Azorean weather to change within hours: sun, fog and rain in a single day is normal here.
How do I navigate the trail?
The trail (GR1 SMA) is waymarked with red and white blazes, and yellow ones on some sections. Even so, there are stretches where the marking thins out, particularly in fog. That's why we give you access to our app with GPS navigation that works without mobile coverage, GPX tracks for every stage and practical route information. Download it before you leave and it works offline.
Is there anywhere to eat or refill water along the stages?
Not much, and it needs planning. Santa Maria has around 5,500 inhabitants and the villages on the route are tiny; some bars only open in July and August. Always set off with enough water for the full day and lunch in your pack.
The shelters have drinking water and a basic kitchen if you'd rather cook for yourself. If you'd prefer not to carry food or cook after a day's walking, you can choose one of the options that includes dinner and breakfast at all four shelters. Note that dinners on the three hotel nights are never included, in any option.
How do I get to Santa Maria?
You fly to Ponta Delgada (São Miguel), the main Azorean airport, which has direct connections from Lisbon and Porto. From there you take the inter-island flight to Santa Maria, just 30 minutes, operated by SATA/Azores Airlines.
This local flight is not part of the base price, but we can arrange it for you as an optional service so you don't have to worry about schedules and connections — see the Prices tab for details.
The programme includes one night in Ponta Delgada on arrival and another on the way back: the first gives you a buffer if your international flight lands late, the last leaves you a free day to see São Miguel before flying home.
What does Santa Maria have that the other Azorean islands don't?
It's the oldest in the archipelago — around eight million years, against half a million for the youngest — and the only one that was once submerged, which makes it the only island in the Azores where marine fossils are found. That gives it a different landscape: alongside the volcanic rock there is sandstone, red clay at Barreiro da Faneca and white-sand beaches, something unheard of elsewhere in the archipelago. It also sits outside the usual tourist circuit, so you'll walk almost entirely alone.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes, and it's a rewarding route to do solo: at the shelters you'll meet other walkers doing the same circuit. There is a Solo Traveller rate for all three options, covering a single room on the three hotel nights. Shelter nights are always in a shared dormitory sleeping up to six.
How does this compare to hut-to-hut hiking in the Alps?
Same rhythm — walk all day, sleep in a shelter, repeat — but very different in practice. Alpine huts are staffed, serve meals and hold dozens of people. The shelters here are small, unstaffed stone barns sleeping six, where you cook for yourself and bring your own sleeping bag. No altitude, no scrambling, no snow: the challenge is distance and weather. And unlike an Alpine hut in August, here you can walk a whole stage without meeting anyone.
Will I manage with English on Santa Maria?
Portuguese is the language of the island, and outside the hotels you shouldn't expect much English — Santa Maria is small and rural. It rarely matters, though: the trek is self-guided, and everything from us is in English, including the route notes, the app and 24h phone support. Learn bom dia and obrigado and you'll get further than you'd expect.

Additional nights
It is also possible to book additional nights before or after the trekking week, or extra days to relax in Santa Maria.
Difficulty level
To successfully complete the 5 stages of the GR1 in Santa Maria, you need to have adequate physical fitness. The route is not technical but accumulates 70 km in 5 days with long distances and changing weather. Depending on the time of year, temperatures can vary considerably. The use of trekking poles is highly recommended.
Trails
The GR1 of Santa Maria is the longest hiking trail on this island, with 70 km total in a circular route. The trails are homologated according to European standards, although some sections have little signage — it is recommended to carry offline maps.
We recommend
Proper hiking clothing and trekking boots. Sleeping bag (optionally it is possible to obtain one in Santa Maria). 45–55L backpack, waterproof, headlamp and trekking poles. In summer, swimsuit highly recommended. If you don't want to book the breakfast and dinner option, you should consider bringing food for the day, energy snacks and external battery.
Luggage transfer
Optionally we take care of transferring your luggage from one refuge to the next (maximum 8 kg per person), so during the stages you only have to carry a backpack with essentials for the day. Before starting the itinerary, you can leave your extra luggage at the Vila do Porto accommodation, where you will spend your last night on Santa Maria island.
Only bookable from April 1 to October 31!
