The island of São Miguel is a patchwork of agricultural fields stretching to the horizon, separated by rows of hydrangeas blooming in shades of blue and purple, as if nature had decided to paint her own pictures. At the heart of São Miguel are the Sete Cidades lagoons, twin lakes that, despite being side by side, exhibit different colours: one green and the other blue. This place, shrouded in legend, offers a breathtaking panoramic view, where the sky is reflected in the placid waters, creating a perfect mirror of the slowly passing clouds.

Lagoa das Sete Cidades

This is one of the most iconic places in São Miguel. It consists of twin lakes located in the crater of an ancient volcano, one green and the other blue. The view from the Vista do Rei viewpoint is spectacular. It is possible to walk around the area on its splendid trails, enjoy the panoramic views and explore the small village of Sete Cidades.

Lagoa do Fogo

A volcanic lake located in the centre of the island, surrounded by unspoilt nature. It is wilder and less accessible than Sete Cidades, which gives it an air of serenity and isolation. Hiking trails take you to the edge of the crater, where you can enjoy breathtaking views. It is also an ideal place for birdwatching and enjoying the tranquillity.

Caldeira Velha

A natural spot with a small waterfall of hot water and thermal pools surrounded by tropical vegetation. It is a magical place, perfect for relaxing in a natural environment. Bathing in its thermal waters is one of the most pleasurable experiences, as well as enjoying the exuberant surroundings.

Furnas

Famous for its hot springs and geysers. In the Terra Nostra Park, you can immerse yourself in thermal pools surrounded by a spectacular botanical garden. …And don’t miss the experience of tasting the ‘Cozido das Furnas’, a traditional stew cooked underground with volcanic heat.

Santa Iria Viewpoint

One of the most impressive viewpoints on the island, it offers panoramic views of the northern coastline of São Miguel. From here, you can see the cliffs plummeting into the Atlantic Ocean. You can enjoy spectacular views. A perfect place to appreciate the strength of the island’s coastal landscape.

Gorreana Tea Plantations

São Miguel is home to the only tea plantations in Europe. The Fábrica de Chá Gorreana is the oldest, where you can appreciate this form of cultivation and how tea is processed in the traditional way. It is possible to tour the plantations, visit the factory and taste different types of tea.

Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo

Volcanic islet off the south coast of São Miguel. An ideal place for swimming and snorkelling. A natural lagoon with crystal clear water forms inside the crater. Reached by boat from Vila Franca do Campo.

Ponta Delgada

The island’s capital is a vibrant and picturesque city. Its cobbled streets, historic squares and colonial buildings offer a blend of history and culture. It is worth visiting the local market, exploring the church of São Sebastião, strolling along the harbour and enjoying the local cuisine in its many restaurants.

Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park

A nature park in the northeast of the island, famous for its waterfalls and old watermills. It is an ideal place to explore the hiking trails, photograph the waterfalls and relax in peaceful surroundings.
