Algarve rota vicentina

stages

4 stages of approx. 9- 19 Km. each, to walk the best of Algave Fishermen's Trail

The Lagos – São Vicente lighthouse hiking adventure

The southwestern region of Portugal, known as the Alentejo and Algarve, especially the Costa Vicentina, has historically been a sparsely populated area, mainly dedicated to agriculture, fishing and livestock farming. The coast remained relatively isolated for centuries, allowing it to preserve its unique biodiversity and almost untouched natural landscape.

For centuries, rural roads and fishermen’s paths connected small villages in the Algarve, cliffs and beaches, used by locals to access the sea, graze livestock or trade between villages. These paths in the Algarve, many of them of ancestral origin, formed the basis of what would later become the Rota Vicentina.

The stretch from Lagos to the São Vicente Lighthouse

The trail connecting Lagos to the São Vicente Lighthouse is one of the most spectacular stretches of the southern coast of the Portuguese Algarve. This approximately 57-kilometre route runs along vertical cliffs of golden limestone, crosses hidden coves with turquoise waters and skirts rock formations sculpted by millennia of marine erosion.

After passing countless coves and secluded beaches of fine white sand, the trail finally reaches the impressive Cape St. Vincent, the southwesternmost point of continental Europe, now an iconic symbol of the Portuguese Algarve.

Highlights of the trip:

Algarve – Fishermen’s Trail: along the southwestern Portuguese coast

Fishing villages and hamlets with an Atlantic flavour

Stunning landscapes on a beautiful and unforgettable hiking trail

History and development of the route

At the beginning of the 21st century, the tourist and ecological value of this region of the Portuguese Algarve began to be recognised. In 1995, with the creation of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, conservation measures were established that limited urbanisation and promoted sustainable tourism in the Algarve.

However, it was in the 2000s that the idea arose to create an official hiking trail that would take advantage of the Algarve’s ancient local paths, combining nature tourism, sustainable development and economic revitalisation of rural communities.

The initiative was launched by the non-profit organisation Rota Vicentina Associação (founded in 2010), which brought together local stakeholders: municipalities, rural tourism companies in the Algarve, environmental NGOs and local communities.

In 2012, the Rota Vicentina was officially inaugurated, with two main itineraries: the Trilho dos Pescadores (Fishermen’s Trail), following the coast along paths traditionally used by local fishermen in the Algarve, and the Caminho Histórico (Historic Trail), an inland route connecting historic villages, rural and agricultural paths.

Both routes totalled more than 350 km of marked trails, crossing the Alentejo and the Algarve, from Santiago do Cacém to Cabo de São Vicente in Sagres. The section from Lagos to the São Vicente Lighthouse was one of the most accessible and spectacular segments of this network, becoming an essential experience for hikers and nature lovers visiting the Portuguese Algarve.

The Algarve: Southern Portugal’s treasure

The Algarve is Portugal’s southernmost region and one of Europe’s most sought-after tourist destinations. With its stunning golden cliffs, fine sandy beaches and crystal-clear Atlantic waters, the Algarve has become synonymous with sun, sea and an enviable quality of life.
This Portuguese region stands out for its exceptional climate, with over 300 days of sunshine a year, making the Algarve a paradise for those seeking to escape harsh winters. Mild temperatures throughout the year allow you to enjoy outdoor activities in any season, from world-class golf courses to hiking trails through protected natural landscapes.

The Algarve coastline is extraordinarily diverse. In the western part, there are spectacular rock formations and pristine beaches ideal for surfing enthusiasts. The central coast, with resorts such as Albufeira and Vilamoura, offers all the modern amenities without losing its Portuguese charm. To the east, the Algarve region boasts long sandy beaches and the tranquillity of the Ria Formosa, a natural wetland park that is home to impressive biodiversity.

Beyond its beaches, the Algarve hides cultural and historical treasures. Whitewashed villages such as Tavira, with its Baroque churches and Roman bridges, or Lagos, with its fascinating maritime past, invite visitors to discover the region’s rich heritage. Faro, the capital of the Algarve, preserves a walled old town that transports visitors to bygone eras, while Silves displays the vestiges of Arab occupation with its imposing red sandstone castle.

Gastronomy is another of the Algarve’s great attractions. Fresh seafood and fish are the stars of a cuisine that combines tradition and innovation. Seafood cataplanas, grilled sardines and octopus rice are just some of the delicacies to be savoured. The region’s wines, although less well known than those of the Douro, are gaining international recognition, especially the robust reds from the interior.

The Algarve is also a family destination par excellence, with water parks, marine zoos and calm beaches perfect for children. For the more adventurous, it offers water sports, diving in underwater caves and kayaking routes through the famous Benagil caves.
In recent years, the Algarve has positioned itself as a preferred destination for retirees and remote workers, attracted by its excellent value for money, modern infrastructure and welcoming international community. The region perfectly combines Portuguese authenticity with contemporary comforts, creating a unique balance that explains why the Algarve continues to captivate millions of visitors every year and become home to many of them.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does this walking holiday cover?

Four stages along the southern Algarve coast, from Lagos to the São Vicente Lighthouse: 56.9 km in total, with 1,055 m of ascent and 1,016 m of descent. It is 6 days and 5 nights, walking point to point between Lagos, Praia da Luz, Salema and Sagres, with the excursion to the cape on day 5.

How far do I walk each day, and how fit do I need to be?

The stages are 13.3 km (Lagos–Praia da Luz), 8.5 km (Praia da Luz–Salema), 19.6 km (Salema–Sagres) and 15.5 km (Sagres–São Vicente Lighthouse–Sagres, out and back). The third is the longest and the hilliest, with 382 m of ascent. The programme is level 2 out of 5: you need good fitness and some regular walking experience, especially for the cliff sections.

What will I see along the way?

Ponta da Piedade, with its natural arches, caves and rock stacks, right after leaving Lagos; cliffs up to 50 metres high, hidden coves and small unspoilt beaches; the fishing village of Salema; Sagres Fortress; and Cape St Vincent, the south-westernmost point of mainland Europe, long considered the end of the world.

What is the excursion to Cape St Vincent like?

On day 5 you set out from Sagres and return there, where you sleep for two nights: 15.5 km out and back (+156 m / −153 m) along cliffs rising up to 75 metres above the Atlantic. You can walk back the same way or, if you request it when booking, wait for our transfer to pick you up.

Where do I stay each night?

In selected accommodation with breakfast, subject to availability and always with similar alternatives: Hotel Riomar in Lagos, Quinta do Mar in Praia da Luz, Residencial Salema in Salema and Mareta Beach B&B in Sagres, where you spend the last two nights. In Praia da Luz the accommodation is slightly away from the coastal path.

What is included and what is not?

Included: 5 nights’ accommodation with breakfast, luggage transfers between accommodations, stage descriptions and GPX tracks through our offline GPS navigation app, an informative video call on arrival day (if you wish) and 24-hour assistance throughout your trip. Not included: flights, the transfer from Faro to Lagos on day 1 and back to the airport on the last day, and lunches and dinners.

How do I get to Lagos and back to the airport?

The easiest way is to fly into Faro Airport, which is well connected with many European cities. The transfer from Faro to Lagos on the first day and back to the airport on the last day is up to you: you can take a bus or book an optional private transfer.

    How does luggage transfer work?

We take your suitcase from one accommodation to the next, so you walk with just a daypack with the essentials. We recommend one suitcase per person, no more than 20 kg. On the day of the excursion to the cape you do not change accommodation: you sleep in Sagres again.

How do I find my way on the trail?

The trails are waymarked, and you also get our app with GPS navigation that works without signal, including the description and GPX track of each stage. Download it before you leave and follow it on your phone offline.

When is the best time to go?

We operate from 1 February to 30 November; bookings are not available in December or January. Spring and autumn are usually the most pleasant months for walking. Portugal’s high tourist season runs from 1 June to 30 September: it is busier, accommodation costs more and early-booking discounts do not apply.

How do I book, and what is the cancellation policy?

A deposit per person secures the booking, and the balance is due 30 days before arrival. We confirm within 24 hours and, if there is no availability, we refund your payment or suggest alternative dates. Up to 21 days before arrival you get a 100% refund (except the initial deposit); after that the refund decreases in steps. Full details are in the Prices section.

How does it differ from the full Rota Vicentina?

The full Rota Vicentina is 10 stages over 12 days; this programme covers only the southern end, from Lagos to Cape St Vincent, in 4 stages over 6 days. It is the option for a shorter trip: fewer kilometres and a slightly gentler level (2 out of 5, compared with 3).

Can I travel alone or adapt the programme to my pace?

Yes. It is a self-guided programme with no group and no fixed departures: you choose your dates, and there is a specific rate for solo travellers in the Prices section. The programme is flexible: you can reorder the stages to fit in rest days, add nights before or after, or extend your stay in Portugal. Tell us what you have in mind and we will adapt it.

What should I pack for the walking days?

Sturdy walking shoes with good grip, sun protection (hat, sunscreen) and enough water for the day, as there is little shade on the cliff sections. Add a light windproof layer, since the Atlantic coast can be breezy, and carry it all in a small daypack: your suitcase travels separately.

If you have any further questions that haven’t been covered here, please have a look at the general FAQs section or get in touch with our team. We have extensive knowledge of Portugal and the many opportunities they offer for hiking at your own pace.

Natour travel organised our walking holiday on Menorca very well - all the details were taken care of. The accommodation was great, and Belén was great at rearranging some transfers to avoid walking in a very rainy day! We'll definitely use Natour again for another adventure! John

We had a fantastic experience with Natour Travel while hiking the GR131 on Tenerife. Our first contact with Natour actually started some time ago, when we were looking into hiking the GR131 on Gran Canaria. We got in touch with Belén and immediately had a very positive impression of Natour and the way they work. Eventually, we changed our plans from Gran Canaria to Tenerife and we are very happy that we decided to organise this trip with Natour. They arranged everything around the hike: our accommodations, luggage transport from one hotel to the next, and transfers to and from the start and finish points of the different stages. Everything worked perfectly, allowing us to simply focus on hiking and enjoying Tenerife. What really stood out was their flexibility. On several days we finished our hike much earlier than the estimated time, sometimes almost two hours early. It was never a problem. We simply got in touch, Natour contacted the taxi company, and our pickup was moved forward. No hassle, no complicated arrangements just quick, friendly and practical service. Exactly what you want after a long day of hiking! We previously organised our GR131 hikes on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura completely ourselves, including all accommodations and logistics. Having now experienced how easy and enjoyable Natour makes this, we already know that we will use them again for the remaining islands. Gran Canaria, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma are still on our GR131 list and Natour will definitely be our first choice to organise them. A huge thank you to Miguel, Belén and everyone involved for the excellent organisation, personal contact and incredible flexibility. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Highly recommended for anyone planning a hiking trip in the Canary Islands!

Natour were fast, efficient and friendly from the start. We've walked thousands of Kms of trails all over the world, but those Natour pulled together for us were spectacular - some of the best we've experienced. They maintain contact via WhatsApp and were flexible around our wants and needs. Everything came together very smoothly. I'd recommend them strongly.

We booked a 7 day self guided walking holiday with Miguel from Natour. It was very well organised and we had a meeting with Miguel the day before we started walking to discuss the route and logistics. The walking was scenic and varied. The combination of taxis and buses to and from trailheads worked well. The hotels were comfortable, clean and friendly. Miguel was also available to rearrange a taxi drop off point when we needed modify a walk due to poor weather. I would be happy to recommend Miguel and Natour to others thinking of booking a self guided walking holiday.

Natour developed a bespoke accommodation and walking plan for 4 people on a recent 1 week holiday to Menorca - walking the Cami de Cavalls. This included researching suitable hotels to our budget and arranging for our luggage to be collected and moved between hotels each day. They provided maps via the platform Outdooractive. They kept in constant touch with us by What's App throughout the trip. I would thoroughly recommend their services to anyone considering a walking holiday in Menorca.

According to the year season, temperatures can be extreme (hot and/or cold). Therefore, it is necessary to have suitable warm clothes permanently, to be removed as layers if necessary. Some parts of this trail include passages with slippery loose stone. Although most of this trail is roomy enough, certain sections are quite aerial and require caution.
