Volcano tour self-guided
We transfer you daily to the Refugio del Pilar, from where you can start your walk along the mythical Volcanoes Route. This hike starts at an altitude of 1450 metres above sea level and climbs progressively up the Cumbre Vieja until ireaching almost 2000 metres. The twin cones of Las Deseadas mark the turning point from where the GR 131 begins its relentless descent to Los Canarios de Fuencaliente (although the GR 131 continues downwards to the lighthouse). Along the way, you will leave behind such amazing volcanoes as Hoyo Negro, the Duraznero and Volcán Martín.

The volcano tour on La Palma
Our transfer will take you to Refugio El Pilar, 1450 metres above sea level. The volcano tour on La Palma begins there. And you will find the GR 131 that runs along the Cumbre Vieja towards Fuencaliente. This whole mountain range is a huge volcano that erupts periodically. Recently we have had a destructive eruption at a lower elevation of this range, which flowed towards the west of the island. The Volcanoes Route has not been affected though. The road climbs up to 2000 metres when you reach Las Deseadas (twin cones). But before that you will have passed the craters of Hoyo Negro, Nambroque and Duraznero. All three were part of the 1949 eruption.
The volcano tour on La Palma has a total length of 17.5 km and crosses historic volcanic sites, such as the Martín volcano, with its beautiful red tones, which erupted in 1646. The end point of this route is the southern village of Fuencaliente (Los Canarios).

The volcano tour on La Palma
Possibly on of the most impresives walks that you can do on our island. A demanding hike of 17,5 Km
Transfer to Refugio del Pilar
From Los Cancajos or Santa Cruz de La Palma, the transfer to the starting point of this route takes approximately 30 minutes. The road climbs up through San Isidro and crosses the summit at one of its lowest points: El Refugio del Pilar. The GR 131 crosses this recreational area, much appreciated by the local population in the summer season.
The San Juan Volcano
It was on the 23rd of June 1949 when the earth split and the lava came out of its entrails. And it was the day of San Juan. This was the penultimate volcano on La Palma and it produced three beautiful craters: Hoyo Negro, Nambroque and Duraznero. And in this order these are the first three volcanoes you will see on this route.
The Deseadas
The name can be misleading, as they are two suggestive protuberances at the top of the Cumbre Vieja. They are the twin volcanic cones with the highest elevation (1,949 metres above sea level) and also represent the halfway point of the route on the way to Fuencaliente.
Martin Volcano
In Tenerife they thought that the pirates were attacking La Palma with tremendous cannon shots. So loud was the roar of the eruption of Volcán Martín on St. Martin’s Day in 1646. A volcano whose lava flowed for almost as many days as the last one (as yet unnamed) and which enlarged the island to the east with a new gorge.
Fuente de Los Roques Refuge
Fountain and picnic area, located 1100 metres above sea level, at the end of the Volcanoes Route. If necessary, the route can be shortened by 3.5 km, ending at this point.
Los Canarios de Fuencaliente
Why two names for the same locality? Los Canarios: this was the name given to the original inhabitants of La Palma when the conquistadors arrived on the island. And Fuencaliente: there used to be a hot spring which was buried by the eruption of the San Antonio volcano in 1677.
The return to the hotel
The only bus stop is in the square next to the road that crosses the village. There you will also find the Information Centre. Buses 200 and 201 connect Fuencaliente with Cancajos and Santa Cruz de La Palma every hour. Next to the map you will find all available timetables for this bus line.
