About La Palma
The island of La Palma, with just 724 square kilometres, rises majestically to 2,426 metres above sea level and is one of the most rugged in the world. The central mountain range that divides the island generates different microclimates that differentiate the vegetation on each side. On the eastern side, we see evergreen heather and fayas. In contrast, the west side has Mediterranean-type forests, with pine forests and scrubland such as rockrose. Although La Palma has recently suffered a very devastating eruption, the damage is confined to a small strip of the island in the southwest. The entire northern half of La Palma has lived relatively untouched by this eruption and its effects are not felt at all today. The trails in the north of La Palma still offer the same scenery as before and remain as beautiful as ever. Our GO NORTH programme offers you the 6 essential routes in the north of La Palma:

Along the coast and cliffs of the northeast.
Puntallana is the starting point. The GR130 is a long-distance footpath that runs along the northern coast and crosses one ravine after another. At 400 metres above the sea, the path leads gently towards the coast. We will pass over Los Nogales beach and cross the Barranco de La Galga ravine on our way to San Andrés.
The laurel forests at Los Tilos
The forest of Los Tilos was the precursor to the subsequent declaration of the Biosphere Reserve for the whole island. Its enormous botanical interest, formed by rare endemic species with a flora typical of the tertiary era. From there, the path leads slowly towards Barlovento, crossing a plant world of extraordinary beauty.
The dragon trees of La Tosca, from Barlovento to Franceses
Barlovento is the most northeastern village of La Palma and is situated on a promontory, 600 metres above the sea. From there, the GR130 takes us through the Dragos de La Tosca, crossing the trails in the north of La Palma. After leaving the village of Gallegos behind, we cross the most exquisite ravine before reaching Franceses.
The North in depth
From Franceses, situated in the perfect northern half of La Palma, we have a spectacular view of all the cliffs of the north. And from there our trail leads us to Roque Faro, experiencing the deep north of La Palma. It is a circular trail that then descends towards El Tablado and returns to Franceses, showing the most beautiful side of the villages and ways of life in the north of La Palma.
Walking along the northern coastline
Today we continue along the GR130 towards Santo Domingo de Garafía, enjoying unparalleled scenery. We pass Don Pedro and enter El Mudo, a sparsely inhabited area regularly dominated by the wind. The path continues its gentle descent, crossing many goat enclosures until it reaches the village of Santo Domingo.
Walking along the ridge of La Caldera de Taburiente
The Roque de Los Muchachos, at 2426 metres, is the highest point on La Palma. It is home to the Astrophysical Observatory, a compendium of telescopes of different nationalities. The GR131 footpath crosses all these sites over a long distance of 84 km, which can be walked in sections. The various viewpoints along the entire crest area offer splendid bird’s eye views. It is an indescribable spectacle, with La Caldera at our feet as well as the whole island. But even in good weather it is possible to see the islands of La Gomera, El Teide and El Hierro. All the trails in the north of La Palma end up at crossroads leading to the Roque de Los Muchachos.

Arrival to La Palma

Day 2
Coastal path along the Northeast cliffs
After a short transfer to Puntallana, the route starts with a moderate descent following the route of the Camino Real de la Costa (GR130). On reaching the cliffs, this path crosses three impressive ravines in the direction of the idyllic village of San Andrés. All along the way you will enjoy extraordinary views, with the peak of Mount Teide (Tenerife) on the horizon as you cross numerous tropical fruit farms. San Andrés is a picturesque enclave with a few places to overlap at the end of the route. But nearby are the Charco Azul Natural Pools, an ideal place to cool off with a refreshing swim in summer. Transfer to the hotel in Barlovento.

Day 3
Through the laurel forest of Los Tilos
Short transfer to Los Tilos forest, in whose ravine there is a spectacular 40 m high waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation. The Visitor Centre is worth a visit and offers interesting information about the endemic flora and fauna of this forest. The trail climbs first to the Las Barandas viewpoint and continues across the spectacular ravine of La Herradura, where there are innumerable giant ferns and centenary trees. Finally, after leaving the Laguna de Barlovento behind, the route ends at the Barlovento accommodation itself.

Day 4
Along the Wild North Coast: from Barlovento to Franceses
Today the route starts directly at your hotel. After breakfast, the GR 130 signs will take you to La Tosca, a picturesque hamlet with enormous centenary dragon trees, from where there is a spectacular view of the entire north coast. But the path continues its route, crossing areas of orchards until it reaches Gallegos, an idyllic rural enclave perched on a slope 300 metres above the sea. Here you can enjoy a good lunch in the Marleney bar, before continuing on to Franceses. Now it's time to cross one of the most spectacular ravines before the route ends. And your next accommodation is situated in front of an imposing ravine with views towards El Tablado.

Day 5
The Deep North and its magnificent ravines
The GR 130 goes around the north, ravine by ravine, and allows you to walk through its villages as in ancient times. From Franceses, the path descends steeply to the sea and then takes a zigzagging ascent towards El Tablado. This is a village that retains a delightful rural charm. There is still a tiny inn where you can have a refreshing drink before starting the ascent to Roque Faro. The GR130 gives way to the PR LP 9.1 trail, which is circular in nature and crosses lush landscapes of extraordinary greenery on its ascent. When we reach Roque Faro we find the legendary tasca Casa Reyes, where the exquisite goat stew in sauce allows us to regain our strength after the relentless climb. After a well-deserved refreshment, the path descends down the other side of the ravine back towards Franceses.

Day 6
Santo Domingo de Garafía: towards the north-west of La Palma
The next section of the GR 130 takes you along the northwest coast to the remote village of Santo Domingo de Garafía. After a short transfer to La Zarza (1000 metres above sea level) the trail first runs through a mystical laurel forest in the direction of Don Pedro where the GR 130 resumes. From there you start to enter the northwest of La Palma through the Punta del Mudo and across abandoned villages. This is an area where the trade winds are frequent and where goat enclosures abound. But spectacular dragon trees also dot the landscape before crossing the Barranco de La Luz ravine and arriving in Santo Domingo de Garafía. After the hike, a local taxi takes you back to your accommodation in Franceses.

Day 7
Above the Caldera de Taburiente National Park
After a transfer to the Roque de los Muchachos, at an altitude of 2426 m, the GR 131 trail runs along the edge of La Caldera, one of the largest erosion craters in the world. Leaving behind the various observatories of the Astrofísico de Canarias, the trail progresses slightly downhill through Los Andenes, with the imposing view of the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro on the horizon. Leaving the Pico de La Cruz (2,351 m) behind, the GR 131 heads south, offering spectacular views of both sides of the island. A little further on rises Pico de La Nieve (2,239 m), marking the end of this impressive route. But you will still have to descend to the road where the taxi awaits to take you to Santa Cruz de La Palma.

The hiking week is not suitable for vertigo sufferers. Some walks can be considered as strenuous and parts of some trails has narrow passages. Some sections can be slippery due to loose stones and/or wet parts, especially in rainy days. To join the hiking week and enjoy the tours, it is essential to be healthy and to have good physical condition.Trails
