The Roque Bus Excursion

A spectacular view from 2,400 m above La Palma on the Roque Muchachos excursion, with the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro on the horizon. After crossing the highest point of the island and enjoying the spectacular Roque de Los Muchachos, we travel north with its indescribable nativity. We visit the Puntagorda market and stop at the Mirador del Time.

Astrophysical Observatory of the Canary Islands

Excursion to the highest point of the island. Until we reach the Roque de Los Muchachos, situated 2,426 metres above sea level, we leave behind us five different levels of vegetation on a vertiginous ascent to the highest point of La Palma.

The summit viewpoints on the Roque Muchachos excursion

An extraordinary perspective opens up before us, showing the grandeur of the Crater of La Caldera de Taburiente from a bird’s eye view. The silhouettes of the neighbouring islands of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro can be seen on the horizon. Various viewpoints extend over the crests and show us the smallest details of every corner of the island. Due to the pure air and the absolute darkness of its nights, this enclave has become a privileged setting for astronomical observation. Its immense vantage point houses one of the largest observatories in the world: the Roque de Los Muchachos Astrophysical Observatory.

The Puntagorda street market

Now the winding road leads us westwards on a rapid descent towards the coast. The beautiful pine forests give way to a sea of almond trees, whose blossom will be in January, in a landscape of steep terraces and small traditional bodegas. Puntagorda and its Farmer’s Market welcome us with open arms to show us their exquisite specialities and interesting artisan products.

El Time and Tazacorte

The route along the west coast crosses Tijarafe and reaches the majestic Mirador del Time, where we can enjoy a magnificent view over the Barranco de Las Angustias ravine, the plains of the Aridane Valley and the spectacular southern mountain range, also known as the Ruta de Los Volcanes (Route of the Volcanoes). After crossing the enormous canyon through which the waters of the Taburiente River flow, we pass by the picturesque Puerto de Tazacorte and Villa de Tazacorte, before heading back to the hotels.

The Roque de Los Muchachos

It was a place of worship for the aborigines. A place of initiation for Guanche adolescents. Today, it is a technological centre for observing the firmament.
